Collision investigators have spent the night examining the scene of a serious crash in Havenstreet in which a man suffered potentially life-threatening injuries, with a 17-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services rushed to the village of Havenstreet at around 20:45 last night (Wednesday) when 2 cars collided head-on, resulting in 2 elderly people being seriously injured and 6 others sustaining minor injuries. A white Vauxhall Corsa and a Skoda Rapid – also white – partially left the road on the top bend by the Little Cow Shed. The Corsa was travelling towards Newport. An update from the hospital late last night revealed that a man in his 70s, from Ryde, suffered potentially life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. A woman in her 60s, also from Ryde, sustained serious injuries.
Confirmation of the extent of the injuries sustained in the crash led to the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit being called in during the early hours of this morning to forensically examine the crash site. The team arrived in Havenstreet at around 04:00 and have been mapping out the scene, collating photographs and measurements.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that the 17-year-old driver of the Vauxhall Corsa, from Newport, has been bailed whilst investigations continue. The road has remained closed overnight and is likely to be closed for the rest of the morning. Motorists are advised to avoid the area, diverting locally. The road is closed at the junctions with Church Lane, Firestone Copse Road and Stroudwood Road.
