Langham Court Hotel in Shanklin scored 0 – urgent improvement necessary – when the Environmental Health team visited the run-down establishment last month (July).
The Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team paid a visit to the establishment of Atherley Hill in Shanklin on 1st July and found no fewer than 16 serious faults in the operation of the hotel.
Inspectors found multiple issues regarding hazard analysis and critical control points including not checking whether meat products were cooked to a safe temperature, not ensuring regular checks of refrigeration temperatures and failing to make sure that stock was rotated and or removed when past its sell-by date. Boxes of mince pies – over 2-and-a-half years out of date – were also found in the dry store.
They also found that pre-cooked, chilled food – that was to be given to 50 school children – was left on kitchen worktops warming instead of being in a refrigeration unit at 8c, with the mentioned food which consisted of cheese, eggs and cooked meats reaching almost 11c when tested. This increases the risk of bacteria growth in the foodstuffs.
The hotel lacked hand basins, with the 1 in the kitchen offering no hot or cold water for staff to wash their hands before preparing food. In addition, staff did not wash their hands before they handled food, with service stopped prior to any of the food being handled to enable staff to wash their hands.
Raw meat was stored close to read to eat items in the walk in freezer, whilst the space on the shelves was full other goods were stored on the floor of the freezer.
The inspection also found that 1 member of staff didn’t know how to use a temperature probe and became confused when it read in Fahrenheit and was unable to get the probe to read in degrees – attempting to read the temperature with a fridge thermometer instead.
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 20
Compliance with structural requirements – 20
Confidence in management/control procedures – 20
Total score: 60 (0 rating)

A coat of white paint each year on the outside, may draw in the unwary, but inside is what counts.
So, expect another fire, and another plot to be filled with flats soon.
This hotel doesn’t even get a coat of paint!!
Yuck, but just a thought we make our kids packed lunches with cheese, ham, egg and yogurt etc, they take to school in bag then leave on side or locker at 20-30°c for 4/5hrs before they then eat !. Why are schools not required to keep food below 8°c ?
Because as Parents, it is YOUR responsibility to use some of the child benefit paid each week, along with the child tax credits to buy a cool bag, and put in the freezer overnight an ice pack to put inside the cool bag each day.
It will require a little effort on parents part, hence the issue I guess, as too many expecting ‘others’ to look after what they can’t be bothered to do.
And the rest of society shouldn’t have to fund your choice of having children or maintaining their food, as we pay via our taxes more than enough now.
So true mate.
They will expect the Government to pay, via our taxes, for someone to come round and read their offspring a bed time story next and tuck them in so they don’t have to get off the backsides whilst watching Sky Glass HD films of an evening.
Parasites leeching off others to fund their lack of contraception, which is free, so IF you can’t afford / be arsed to care for a child, then use it.
Think maybe people got the wrong idea of what I was saying,no way am I accepting or agreeing with this, I won’t be eating there. But honestly how many parents give their kids freezer blocks or cool bags, especially at high school ?,
Take no notice of the stupid comment Freddie think it’s discussing what they said really some people jump to conclusions on here
If it’s that bad, which it obviously is, why the hell is it not closed immediately until it passes muster?
A dreadful reflection on the environmental health team.
Because the race card would be used if so, and likely being foreign would be added as an excuse for not complying or being aware of UK laws etc etc. Calcutta standards are way below ours despite half the third world arriving and running food outlets.
Yet as we see, standards are slipping perhaps due to lack of decent British food outlets.
Should be closed down …
Sorry but basic hygiene is a given.
No excuses, you’ve failed shut down.
And as for the management!!!!!!!
They should be sacked ….
If it’s the owners they should go on a training course in hotel management ….
Hygiene course etc .
Surely common sense should prevail ?????????
( or no common sense at all )…..
i worked there years ago as a waitress and allso a chambermaid when it was called sherwood court and run by the atkinsons…. was nice then !my god its dire now.
needs closing
soon as the indian gang took over it went intoo a filthy tacky bombay timewarp hotel.
such a shame
Very true, according to their so called website it states languages spoken English and Polish. Says it all really!!!
Well they should be shut down if thats how they have been running things.
Food poisoning can be fatal.
How can people give such little regard to customers paying for a meal.
Its disgusting.
Shut the business down.
There can be no excuse for this.
A sad reflection on the hospitallity sector but undoubtedly the tip of a very big iceburg, if the environmental health team had more resources these stories would be a daily addition to our news on the island.
Mince pies 2.5yrs out of date found?
Says something for the frequency of inspections by EH then doesn’t it?
COVID, Brexit! That’s the usual excuse plus lack of staff that want to work
Should be closed down immediately. Why do these people think they can get away with it.
Standards and health regulations must be adhered to. You can’t run a hotel in this country and think it is acceptable to not follow rules.
perhaps all Food Hygiene Rating – Scores should have to be clearly displayed at the building entrance and on the website where bookings are taken.
They should introduce a very large fine to any establishment that is found to be blatantly disregarding health and safety procedures put in place to protect the public’s health. That will soon improve standards. Hit them where it hurts! As all they care about is money and profit.
Take away their money and profit, watch how quickly things are put right!
They dont care longs they get money, look at there reviews on trip advisor
Bet they use an excuse like problem with past management new procedures now in place.
