11 locations on the Island have been affected by the release of wastewater from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO’s) in the past 24 hours, according to Southern Water.
The CSO locations, scattered across the Island’s coast, act to prevent the flooding of homes and properties during times of heavy rainfall by releasing stormwater and wastewater into the sea when storm tanks become full.
Popular areas such as Ryde, Colwell Bay, and Gurnard all have CSO’s which have discharged in the last 24 hours, with warnings being issued about water quality in these locations.
The full list of 11 locations that have seen discharges from CSO’s is as follows:
- Cowes
- Gurnard
- Colwell Bay
- Totland Bay
- Sandown
- Yaverland
- Whitecliff Bay
- Bembridge
- St Helens
- Seagrove
- Ryde

If this isn’t good enough reason to stop more and more housing developments, what is?
We’ve hardly had any rain for weeks how can they be full?
Is this because planning permission was awarded to development of the floodplains?
About time Southern Water earned the money we are all paying. They are a shambles.
Only recently the island was patting itself on the back for receiving “clean beach” awards. Now this measure of gross incompetence has put that back a decade or more. People come to the island because of its beauty and CLEAN waters, they do not want to come see signs “KEEP OUT OF THE WATER” and bathe in excrement courtesy of Southern Water.
I would say that southern water should pay for the clean – up, but they are already RIPPING US OFF with the use of their water meters.
Makes you wonder when the samples are taken for the clean beach awards.
