The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is once again highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms in the home after a bedroom fire in Freshwater yesterday evening (Monday).
2 appliances were mobilised to an address on Edinburgh Road, Freshwater at 17:19, as first reported by Island Echo. It was reported that a fire had broken out in the bedroom of the terraced property.
It’s now been confirmed that the incident was caused by smouldering smoking materials as a result of individuals smoking inside. Thankfully, the householders had managed to get the situation under control by the time Freshwater’s retained crew arrived on the scene.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and checked for hotspots, as well as venting the room. They also cut out and removed a burnt area of carpet measuring 1.5m x 1.5m and checked walls and loft areas with thermal imaging cameras. The electrics were isolated.
A spokesperson has said:
“Working smoke alarms really do save lives and buy valuable time in catching fires before they get out of control, take a minute to test yours now”.

They were very lucky, I’m a smoker but never in the house
