Fire crews from Newport, Shanklin and Ventnor were mobilised to Whitwell Road at 07:31 following reports that an individual was trapped inside a vehicle which had left the carriageway and come to rest on its side.
Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service also responded to the incident on the rural stretch of road.
The casualty was removed from the wreckage and handed into the care of paramedics, who conveyed the woman to St Mary’s Hospital by land.
The fire service stood down by 08:00.
UPDATE – It has been confirmed that the driver hit black ice and careered off the road.
The local woman from Ventnor was travelling at a normal speed when the incident occurred.

This seems a normal event on the island lately hope all are ok
Are the gritters no out then ? What’s normal speed ?
“Normal speed” ? It’s a joke on the Island. If it’s icy out you drive according to conditions surely. Sounds like someone might have issues with insurance company now after admitting was own fault ! Born and bred islander myself have seen such a change in driving over the years. Everyday I use dual carriageway and ALWAYS get overtaken as people still drive like it’s national speed limit. Clearly marked “30” !! Got dashcam fitted like so many others have now so people are little bit silly as being filmed breaking the law all the time. Not sure if driving tests are too easy or what problem is. But it’s clear our poor Emergency services are always busy because people CANNOT drive . Pure and and simple. It’s nearly always driver error.
Normal speed is too fast in icy conditions, SO que ‘ Phil….
Well said George to fast for condition and lack of experience in a hurry all the time the school just the same
I know the driver. She wasn’t driving fast, she was driving slower because of the road conditions. If taking it slow and hiting black ice can cause this much damage I dread to think what could have happened if someone took that corner at speed.
i’ve watched Initial D.
Want me to test it for you?
More bad driving on the I o w
Y is it that ppl always think it’s the drivers fault….ive driven the island day in day out they r awful even in the dry they r dangerous….mayb let’s stop picking on the motorist and start picking on island rd
