A woman is being treated in hospital on the mainland after being ‘crushed between 2 cars’ on the Red Funnel car ferry this afternoon (Monday).
Those on board the cross-Solent service between the Isle of Wight and Southampton have described hearing loud screaming as the roll on-roll off ferry docked on the mainland at just before 13:30.
Island Echo understands that the woman was walking between 2 vehicles when a lorry ‘shunted’ one of the cars – which was empty at the time – forward, crushing the female passenger from the waist down against the second car.
Chris Sibley, Risk, Safety and Compliance Director at Red Funnel, has said:
“At approximately 1.30pm today, an incident occurred between two passenger vehicles and one HGV onboard Red Osprey whilst the vehicles were departing the ferry.
The police and ambulance service arrived at the scene and a passenger was taken to Southampton General Hospital with minor injuries.
“The police are liaising directly with the driver of one of the vehicles and we are assisting with their enquiry.
“Safety onboard our ferries is of primary importance and the safety of our customers is paramount to us. The crew onboard Red Osprey were on hand immediately to assist with the incident before the emergency services arrived.”
The East Cowes to Southampton service is currently delayed by up to 25 minutes as a result of the earlier incident.
