A woman and her loyal dog have escaped injury after being rescued from a cliff between Gurnard and Thorness this lunchtime (Saturday).
HM Coastguard launched a search and rescue mission to locate and rescue the pair when the alarm was raised with Solent Coastguard at around 11:00.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge, The Needles and Ventnor were mobilised to Gurnard alongside Hamble Lifeboat and Calshot RNLI lifeboat.
The casualty – and her dog by her side – was located in a tricky, hard to reach location around half way between Gurnard and Thorness and successfully transferred into Calshot’s D-class lifeboat, which was able to get close in to the cliff.
Coastguards were redeployed to Thorness Bay to rendezvous with the lifeboat, which brought the woman and her dog ashore.
After a quick check over and words of advice, the woman was soon on her way – this time heading inland back to her motorhome.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

Are all tourists thick?
Natives leave a lot to be desired.
Yep, should have taken the dog and left the lady to find her way back alone, and then she might stop wasting people’s time!
Glad all ok, particularly the dog! I don’t know this area, but why didn’t she just turn around and go back when things got ‘tricky’?
Here we go……stupid holidaymakers, they haven’t a clue have they. Good job to the services in rescuing them. So glad the poor dog is ok.
Have you never gone on holiday? In other words been a holidaymaker?
can’t be much worse outcome than islanders driving tho sunshine
Another mainlander using our emergency services!
They have no common sense at all !!!
Well, those cliffs at Gurnard are really massive, you know… I should think a crippled tortoise might struggle with the topography in those parts, not a reasonably mobile person. Hollibobs mode on: ‘thumb up bum, mind in neutral’!
Some horrible comments on here. What do you think the emergency services are for ?? certainly not to stand around twiddling their thumbs. Glad the lady and her dog were rescued safely. Remember we are all human and all make mistakes and wrong decisions !!!
