Letter to the editor – 12th March 2023
“Should we not be supporting Island goods?
“How come the Seaview ice cream shop sells CORNISH ice cream?
“An excuse was given that they have a larger choice of flavours, but really?
“Come on we all know it is cheaper to buy and who wants that many flavours anyhow?
“Isle of Wight ice cream does more than enough”.

Why does medina foods make New Forest ice cream it’s more about profit than local produce.
It doesn’t make new forest ice cream it just distributes it like it distributes walls ice cream and other big names.
It makes minghella and Isle of Wight ice cream in Newport
Thank you so much for your support. We do over 30 flavours and only use Isle of Wight milk.

Whilst it is good to support island products wherever possible, so much is overpriced ( I know it costs more to produce in small quantities) and is out of reach of island families, cornish ice cream and clotted cream has its own taste and is respected countrywide so why not offer it, then the choice is yours of which to buy.
I’ve always thought that about anywhere on the island that sells ice cream, why not buy island made? The carbon footprint is tiny, plus supporting local businesses.
Apart from the massive carbon footprint of dairy, you mean?
What carbon footprint of dairy?
Google it. In short though, livestock farming is up there with airline travel, vehicles, industry, energy production and any of the other things that produce greenhouse gases. People can downvote my comments as much as they like but it’s the truth. This is NOT breaking news. Plus all the land they need to be housed and fed, the frankly astonishing amounts of water needed too, look that up.
Barbra you need to get ta buck.
What business is it of yours ? What’s cheaper or where it comes from.
Go take your oar somewhere else!
Grown up with Cornish Ice cream, it tastes much better than IW ice cream.
Whack a dollop of clotted cream on any ice cream
Gorgeous
It’s simply the cost. Should one island business put itself at risk purely to support another? If the Seaview ice cream shop were to have to put their prices up and become unaffordable to Island residents because they only stock local products, would that not be another issue that’s moaned about?
It’s a tricky subject and we’d all like to support local where possible. Unfortunately, it isn’t financially viable in every case. Let’s not throw shade at island businesses just because they can’t all be 100% locally sourced.
Why does Lidl sell all sorts of cheese? The island produces cheese and surely we should support island producers. Duh …
Why do Tesco sell Cornish pasties ?
Please don’t insult the Cornish pasty , Ginsters is not a Cornish pasty even the Cornish will tell you that , criminal
Why don’t Isle of Wight ice cream makers have their own retail shop?
I think once upon a time they were called ice cream parlours.
Another Island bleater, eh Baaaabara?
Why do you drive a German car? Why do you have a Chinese phone?
I believe The Seaview Village Community Shop near the Deli sells Calbourne Classic ice cream made on the island along with produce from over 27 island companies. A real local gem for locals and visitors alike!
Island made is no guarantee of quality. I recently bought some awful island produce at Harvey Browns. We should buy what we want to buy based on personal preference.
Agreed, have tried Wight milk a few times, not only is it more expensive it goes off quickly once open. We all have a choice ,but if a retail store can sell cheaper than Wholesale something wrong. Paying more does not make it better- Lurpak or Heinz for instance,or rich tea biscuits etc.
What a stupid letter.
what a stupid letter, they can sell whatever they wish, and whatever makes sense for their business, its up to you whether to buy it or not.
I’m guessing all the food, clothing etc you buy is locally made is it??
Why I totally agree!! What the xxxxxx has it got to do with any one else;) we all like ice cream and j don’t think we really think about it whilst we’re eating it, kids certainly don’t! If it works for them and it’s a better price, especially in this day and age, good on them. It’s a dog eat dog( ice cream!) world. At least they’re trying and have a business still. Get up and do it to give you all nice things. Stop bloody moaning
Whoever makes the ice cream does it really matter some of it is so expensive more so if you ask for additions.
