Bear Grylls may not have been born on the Isle of Wight, but he grew up around here and learnt a lot of his survival skills on the island. His impressive career to date has attracted a lot of interest from islanders, who have enjoyed his recent successful Netflix series.
Grylls’ latest offering, Celebrity Bear Hunt, was a particularly popular series featuring the wilderness expert. Unfortunately, though, Netflix has announced that it has been cancelled after only one season.
Nature Themes Are Hugely Popular in Today’s Entertainment Market
Even though Celebrity Bear Hunt will not be returning for another reason, it’s not because of a lack of viewership. The series was hugely popular across the country, where there has been a huge surge in nature content in recent years.
Everywhere you look now, there’s entertainment that reflects people’s renewed interest in nature. Even Megaways casino games have prominent nature concepts, with animal-themed offerings such as Raging Rhino Megaways and Gorilla Gold Megaways. Titles that centre around fishing, like Power Fishing Megaways and Golden Catch, are among the most popular games at online casinos due to people’s love for the outdoor sport.
There are various television shows set in nature that have enjoyed overwhelming success in recent years as well. For example, Clarkson’s Farm is one of the most popular series on Amazon Prime Video, and this has inspired similar offerings like Vinnie Jones in the Country.
The British public seem to enjoy anything that involves Grylls, and Celebrity Bear Hunt also included another national treasure in Holly Willoughby. The series lasted for eight episodes and involved 12 celebrities being hunted down by Grylls. Even though it was an exciting and original concept, it won’t be returning to screens.
Series Was Reportedly Highly Expensive to Film
The main reason that Celebrity Bear Hunt was cancelled was down to exceedingly high production costs. On top of that, even though it was viewed by many people in the UK, it didn’t attract a massive global audience.
The insurance costs were said to be extremely high, as was the budget for filming in the jungles of Costa Rica. The stars of the series will have needed hefty pay packets as well, with well-known faces like Mel B, Joe Thomas, and Big Zuu involved. Perhaps Netflix realised it might need bigger stars for future seasons and deemed the potential cost of this to be too much.
Grylls Has a New Series With a Slightly Different Angle
For people who still need a Grylls fix and want to see him doing what he does best, the 51-year-old has a new series that’s currently airing on BBC One. Wild Reckoning involves the survivalist taking different people out into the wild to reconnect with nature and overcome problems in their lives.
It’s also possible to rewatch some Grylls content on Netflix, with Celebrity Bear Hunt still available and Running Wild with Bear Grylls on there as well. There’s also the interactive series, You vs. Wild, which gives you the choice over what happens.
Celebrity Bear Hunt may have been great, but it wasn’t sustainable for Netflix. The good news is that there are still various Grylls shows to choose from, and there could be future offerings on the streaming service as well.
