West Street in Ryde has been closed this morning (Monday) to allow Southern Water to continue its water main replacement scheme, which has now been ongoing for over a year.
Last November it was announced that a major programme of works would be taking place in the Ryde area with a 20-week closure of Ashey Road until March 2018. That closure was extended by at least 5 weeks at the end of March.
Southern Water have previously said that works would continue in the West Street area until ‘the end of Summer’, but as winter takes hold the scheme continues to affect residents and motorists in the town.
West Street is now closed from its junction with Green Street to its junction with Swanmore Road – a distance of 414 metres. It comes just days after the removal of a closure on West Street in the opposite direction between Green Street and Queen’s Road.
Motorists should divert via High Street/Swanmore Road (outboard) and Pellhurst Road/Argyl Street (inbound).
Last month Island Echo revealed that travel chaos will ensue in Newport next month when Southern Water begin a water main replacement scheme on Staplers Road. It’s due to end in April 2019.
