UPDATED: Motorists heading in and out of Newport are facing 4 months of travel chaos early next year due to water main renewal work by Southern Water.
According to official traffic notices, a one-way restriction will be imposed on the busy stretch of road as Southern Water work to replace a water main between Cross Lane and Mayfield Road.
The major scheme is listed as beginning on 7th January 2019 and coming to an end on 12th April. That said, other similar schemes in Cowes, Brading and Ryde have all overrun in recent years.
It is unclear at this moment in time which way traffic will be permitted to flow and what the official diversion routes will be. A restriction on traffic in either direction will add pressure to Fairlee Road and Blackwater.
Thousands of Islanders look set to be affected by the roadworks, which will clash with the scheme to transform St Mary’s Roundabout into a traffic light junction.
Staplers Road has only recently been completely resurfaced by Island Roads under the PFI contract.
UPDATE FRIDAY – A spokesperson for Southern Water has today said:
“All timings of the work and traffic management will be done in close cooperation with local authorities to ensure our work is carried out as quickly and safely as possible while causing the minimum disruption”.
A dedicated web page will be set up in December to keep local residents informed.
