The Wightlink Warriors, subject to BSPA approval, have handed rider Adam Portwood the chance to get a step up in his speedway career by offering him a reserve team spot after he impressed at last week’s meeting and again at Somerset on Friday.
22-year-old Adam, who lives in the small market town of March in Cambridgeshire, started grass track racing at the age of 6. He progressed to speedway and was the mascot for Peterborough Panthers in 2006. He competed alongside Ashley Morris and Steven Archer representing the Young Lions in the first ever FIM 250 Gold Cup in Germany and the club is hopeful he can draw on this experience to make an impact.
Adam said:
“I have competed in the MDL for many different clubs but last year I decided to take a year away from the sport. However, this year, I have a renewed love for the sport and a huge desire to do well for the Wightlink Warriors.
“I would like to thank the Isle of Wight promotion and team, a lot of whom I have known for quite a while now. I am very keen to learn from the team and cannot wait to ride with them on the track. I am also looking forward to meeting the fans properly on Thursday.”
Wightlink Warriors Team Manager Jackie Vatcher added:
“A big welcome to Adam. I am really pleased to give him the opportunity to ride for the Warriors and, finally, it will be good to have a full complement of 7 Riders for the first time this season. I have known Adam and his family for many years as Neil has worked with him in the British Youth. He is a 100% trier and is sure to be a true Warrior.”
Co-promoter Barry Bishop added:
“Martin and I would like to extend a welcome to Adam and we hope he can take some of the pressure off Jamie. As a club, we continue to look at every option to ensure we have a strong run to the end of the season and improve on last year’s league position or the play offs. We have several targets to achieve this year, both on and off the track, and it is vital that we achieve as many of them as possible.”
