Freshwater-based graffiti artist Steve Miles’ new exhibition ‘Motive’ is now on display at the Quay Art Centre café in Newport.
Steve, an award-winning member of the National Acrylic Painters Association, is presenting his striking urban style work on canvas as part of Quay Arts ‘Punk’ season.
With free entry, you can view the 17 original paintings and recognise the skill involved which has elevated graffiti from street walls to galleries around the world. The exhibition will be open until 5th February 2019.
Steve was introduced to this style of art in the early 80s after seeing magazines about graffiti and hip hop for the first time. He started to create his own letter forms in bright colours and his alias as a graffiti artist emerged under the tag Toxic363. Since then, Steve has spent many years working as an artist in graphic design and the computer games industry, continuing his passion for graffiti on the side. Several years ago swapped walls for canvas to concentrate on his graffiti inspired fine art.
Steve says:
“I use a highly expressive and gestural graphic style of painting that is representational of almost three decades spent as a graphic designer and a graffiti artist. The technique used in this exhibition was based on the effect that I discovered when peeling separate layers of paint off heavily graffitied walls.”
Steve cleverly layers vibrant colours and abstract shapes and lines to create an incredible depth to his work. You can see more of Steve’s art at www.stevemiles.co.uk.
Further works will be available soon in Quay Arts West Gallery as part of its PUNK exhibition from 1st December – 9th February.
