Island Line services have been suspended this evening (Tuesday) due to urgent repairs.
Network Rail engineers need to make urgent repairs to the railway, which means the line must close.
All trains between Ryde St John’s and Shanklin have been cancelled, although a shuttle service is running between Ryde Pier Head and Ryde St John’s.
Disruption is expected until 20:00, according to South Western Railway.
UPDATE @ 20:40 – An hourly service has resumed.

Blimey. The trains don’t run reliably anymore, the chain ferry is a joke (and still out of service on Tuesday despite supposedly being back in service yesterday – well down IWC), the ferry companies have reduced services to the minimum but charge the maximum, busses are unaffordable and the coverage leaves a lot to be desired, going anywhere by road is a total joke now…WTF is happening to transport on the island?
I have had better more reliable and cheaper transport during my years in India and Africa. Ridiculous.
I think that is amazing how they keep these old trains running.
FFS what’s going to happen when we get the new old ones? Any news on that child and the guard over 20p?
Tar mac the lot, run a few electric shuttle buses, no need for high voltage lines, costly maintenance, anyone can drive them and more flexible if picking up passengers from a few locations in each town.
Better safe than sorry surely? I think they do an amazing job keeping such old trains going, and if they need to close the line whilst they do some work, so be it.
We either go over time over budget or simply can’t hack it. This country has a shortage of skilled workers too many in service industry and behind computers.
It’s those people behind computers that give you the opportunity to come on here and voice your opinion.
The opportunity to voice an opinion does not, unfortunately, contribute much to the economy, only to the controversy.
This time it is the track at fault rather than the trains. Hopefully, the track will have the complete overhaul that is long overdue in the New Year. As for these marvellous trains, while it will be sad to see them go after 30 years, their retirement is well deserved. Let us hope the two remaining units end up either in a museum or a heritage railway.
Tar macadem IS the likely answer then. Rails are costly to maintain.
Invest in new trains ?
