Parkhurst Forest has been identified as one of the best places to hear birdsong, according to TripAdvisor.
With spring around the corner and baby bird season upon us, the team at Vine House Farm bird foods has analysed TripAdvisor review data for forests across England to identify the best places to hear birdsong and the forest, situated on the outskirts of Newport, has been found to be the 3rd-best place in the country.
The data analysed the percentage of reviews of 3 stars and above that mention birds for over 30 forests in England, with 9.38% of reviews for Parkhurst Forest mentioning birds. Kielder forest in Northumberland and Forest of Marston Vale in Bedfordshire were ranked in 1st and 2nd respectively
A study by Forestry England found that birdsong is our favourite ‘sound of spring’, gaining almost 70% of the votes.
Another study by King’s College London also found that seeing or listening to birds has a positive impact on our wellbeing, evidencing how important exploring nature is, particularly as spring begins and the dawn chorus is at its strongest.
The data reveals that hundreds of visitors have mentioned birds and birdsong in their reviews of English forests, suggesting that wild birds are an integral part of why we spend time in nature.
Lucy Taylor, manager of Vine House Farm, has said:
“Studies have shown that seeing and listening to birds has a positive impact on wellbeing so visiting any forest or park in the UK should be beneficial to your mood.”

That is a starting point for some very weak research and not a conclusion. The reviews for Parkhurst Forest could all have said: “For years, I had to suffer those birds singing while I was imprisoned. Now, I am out, they are all going to meet their maker. Eat lead birds. Three stars for the pleasure of it.”
Parkhurst Forest is good for something else too after dark.

I have hidden in the car park and heard all sorts of unusual cries, and grunting in Summers evenings there too.
Others likely afraid of being bitten by gnats remain in their cars but try to attract moths by flashing their headlights, I assume to then attract Bats to the swarm of moths for feeding.
Surprised how popular it is, for many gather around to witness the small furry mammal lurking in a warm secluded place there.
