A large tree that has been leaning over Ryde’s canoe lake for decades has finally given way and crashed into the water.
The almighty Scot’s Pine tree has been looking precarious for some time, but overnight the weight became too much and the tree was uprooted.
It’s thought the tree has been part of the landscape at North Walk for over 100 years.
The footpath around the edge of the canoe lake has been blocked by the fall. Safety fencing has been erected.
It is understood that contractors will use a crane to lift the tree out of the water for disposal early next week.

Hope it didn’t hit any ducks or swans when it came down or any ducklings
How ridiculous. This tree was obviously going to fall by the angle of it. Why ever did the council not place a large sleeper size support underneath the trunk into the soil below it to hold it more upright.
All the old wiser workers gone, now just those who gain knowledge from a phone screen not experience.
A century of life ended due to laziness.
Wait until they destroy countless trees at the Penny Feather ruination. The only ‘green’ you will see is growing in someones loft within a decade.
True John. Nobody does anything proactively nowadays, only reactive. One less tree in the biosphere.
How on earth can a tree falling in a lake be news. Perhaps it shows the basic intelligence on the island.
You mean the same intelligence used to make this comment? May not be news to you Ron but advising people the walkway is blocked and to stop others reporting the issue can be seen as ‘news’ to some
The fact you bothered to read, and then comment on such shows it is worthy of attention. One hundred years of growing, and to end like this, because of poor management and or maintenance staff is terrible.
It’s shows how basic and low your intelligence is – That’s for certain!
