A traffic light at one of the Island’s busiest road junctions has been completely flattened by a car tonight (Tuesday).
Police are in attendance of Westridge Cross in Ryde, where all white Suzuki Vitara has gone head on into a traffic light signal.
It was shortly before 22:00 that the incident occurred on Brading Road, resulting in the traffic light being flattened to the ground.
Island Echo understands the vehicle was travelling from Marlborough Road towards Brading when, for unknown reasons, the car collided with the piece of street furniture. The car then was rolled back and around the corner into the final resting position on Bullen Road.
Island Roads are now on scene to assess the damage, and whether temporary traffic lights need to be erected whilst repairs are undertaken.
Motorist will be fearing the worst because road traffic collisions at Downend and Newport Road in Lake have both caused weeks and months of travel disruption in recent times.
Hampshire & Isle Of Wight Constabulary has been approached for a statement.

How? The car looks like it hit a set of traffic lights lol? Thank you IE made me chuckle yet another driver that should maybe not be driving??
What is it with island motorists smashing into
Traffic lights.
Let’s hope these lights are not out of action for
2+ months like the ones in Lake.
Repairing Traffic lights is not Island Roads
speciality, too be honest I DON’T KNOW WHAT
THEY SPECIALISE IN!!
Get a Real Company from the mainland over
to do the repairs.
Worse things happen on the mainland all the time – don’t you ever stop moaning about life on the Island?. If you are so grumpy and dissatisfied with things here there is an alternative you know.
The difference between the island and the mainland
is that the mainlands employ persons who know how to
repair traffic lights.
On the island numpties don’t know how to repair
traffic lights.
Hare and hounds traffic lights and Lake are an Example
of ISLAND CLUELESS NUMPTIES!
The difference is on the mainland they know how to
repair traffic lights.
Numpties on the island don’t!
FACT
Traffic lights are lit up regardless of colour it’s on??? RETEST and GLASSES RQD
Oh god, here we go again. Cue the dumb comments
There is a SERIOUS problem with Numpty drivers on the island.
One minute numpties are dangling off of edges or smashing
into traffic lights.
Specsavers will be busy!
Please let’s hope this is an April Fool!!!
More bad driving on the Iow
Let’s hope the traffic light spares department has got plenty of stock now! With a bit of luck the person behind the steering wheel, (not someone in control of the vehicle or worthy of being called “a driver”), didn’t damage the traffic light controls, otherwise we might have a long wait for repair.
They haven’t cant fix the ones at lake..useless wankers.
My grandson could have repaired these using
his childs tool set.
It’s alright having stock if you know what to do with it.
Island Roads have all the gear but no idea!
unless a car is reversing how can it hit a traffic light other than “head on”
Great !!..Guess it will take 3 months to get repaired causing Havoc !!
Just like Hare and Hounds and Lake lights ..not the same driver is it ??
Pissed up, drugged up or on phone? That’s not just a gentle shunt…
Most probably all 3..
So another 3 months of temp lights as they can’t fix them ..More utter shit driving how was that possible..
The island is a joke
Just come back that way, all appears to be fine – apart from the lights just a few yards away at the Junction with Smallbrook lane. I’m guessing Island roads will finish that before anything is done – if anything.
Ummmm what’s the date today?
Too be honest I don’t know why these lights are on this bit
of pavement, they are not needed.
Over the years I have seen Numpties stop on this jct
in front of these lights!
I AM NOT JOKING EITHER
It was A PERSON behind the steering wheel that drove the car that hit the lights. The car didn’t decide to hit the lights on its own. It was god-awful driving by a person who needs to hand in their licence. Come on Island Echo: stop blaming the cars and write properly. Name and shame these people. [“medical episode” brigade incoming…]
The sooner cars are no longer driven by numpties
and are driverless the better, much safer for
everyone.
