Trading standards have been called in to take up an investigation of fraud against 4 men arrested in Sandown on Friday afternoon.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police were called at 11:25 on Friday morning to a report of men in a van knocking on doors asking for work.
It followed social media posts reporting the same thing the day before (Thursday).
Officers conducted enquiries and made 4 arrests – of men working out of a suspicious Toyota van – on Leed Street in the town at around 14:10 that afternoon.
The men, aged 53, 44, 23 and 18 all from Woking, were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
It has now been confirmed nearly a week later that trading standards are to take over the investigative process.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:
“We are working in collaboration with the police regarding this matter and consequently it’s under further investigation by Trading Standards. We are unable to comment further at this time while enquiries are ongoing.”

Crush the van. Raid their bank accounts and pay back as many people they have swindled.
Six months in jail to reflect on it all
Nothing will be done, they have no permanent address, and they’ve probably disappeared already.
IME Trading Standards department are utterly toothless.
I disagree as Trading Standards have done marvellous work in getting the owner and director of Angel Coatings Resin Drives into the courts. Unfortunately it’s the courts who are allowing the case to be adjourned time and time again. The case at Crown Court (Southampton) adjourned from end of September to end of January now. It would appear that he is playing the game again.
