4 men have been arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation following suspicious behaviour in the Sandown area this week.
Police were called at 11:25 this morning (Friday) to a report of men in a van knocking on doors asking for work.
This follows social media posts reporting the same thing yesterday.
Officers conducted enquiries and made 4 arrests on Leed Street in the town at around 14:10 this afternoon.
It has been confirmed that the men, aged 53, 44, 23 and 18 and all from Woking, were arrested on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
The group remain in police custody at Newport Police Station at this time.

Slap on the wrist no doubt…. assuming it even gets to court
Fraud gets more than most crimes these days.. you get less for being a paedo
Shame arsonists selection of targets are never useful to the greater public
I saw this van on Leed Street this afternoon and further on the Broadway after the zebra crossing was a tatty flat bed transit pulling a dirty old caravan parked at the side of the road. Putting 2 and 2 together but I reckon the travellers are over on the rip off! They were up our road this time last year and next thing a drone came hovering over the back gardens to see what people had worth nicking. Glad they got nicked….Thieving A holes
Well done for your good work in contacting the police last year with your suspicions..
I don’t think. Good to see the public are helping by being vigilant.
How do you know I didn’t contact the police? Because we did……..another keyboard warrior
Unless lots of people contact them they do nothing, even when you witness drug deals and give reg numbers over and over again ,it has to be several different people, which is absolutely ridiculous. A crime is a crime however number of people report it!
There is a washing machine and various other crap that has been dumped outside our block on Slade Road if they wanna come and collect them. Sovereign Housing aren’t too interested in removing the items despite the numerous calls.
Impound their van until after sentencing and all it contains.
Send the rubbish back to where it and many other low life’s originate from.
Irish plates. I wonder what they were doing a long way from home ?
Reported this bunch to the police weeks ago doing the rounds in Brighstone, complete with their false number plate. What took them so long to catch them?
False number plate. Republic of Ireland have different type of plates. Look it up. Northern Ireland the numeric/alphabet isn’t in this sequence. This plate is a mash of the two. Maybe they have a selection in the back of the van to choose from…
than van does not even have a registered license plate or even registered with DVLA and not showing anything on AskMid
It’s an Irish plate, hence the reason you won’t find it on DVLA site
My old Irish plate car shows up just fine
Definitely an Irish number plate. Why would a Republic of Ireland number plate show up on the DVLA? It’s a different country. (A Northern Ireland one would.)
Irish plates are white with black print. Hello from Ireland.
Irish plates are white with black print
Well let’s see if there charged
Probably staying with the other Hedge hoppers @ Fairway caravan park.
Not sure why they have been arrested, they haven’t done anything wrong. You get these types knocking on your door quite a lot on the mainland, you just never have them do any of the work they are offering. Sub standard and prices that will make your eyes water.
Never let ‘door knockers’ in or undertake any work for you, ever.
I think it’s terrible.
There are quite a few mainland “firms” operating over the Island, we must be known as an easy target so be warned. I got conned about 5 years ago by a father and son well several sons who originated from Cornwall, they better not knock on my door again.
I lived near many travellers in London. Most aren’t even from Ireland regardless of accents or plates. Never give work to door knockers and “Keep’em peeled”
And if the few that harp on about building a bridge/tunnel you can expect a lot more if not worse than this to come.
Nice user name …..
Sorry, rights already taken on this one so please change yours to something else.
Why has the registration number being digitised ?? it was all over Facebook, and it was not even a proper registration number. So as that’s a motoring offence there’s a pretty good chance they will be fined.
any further updates on this, the van reg didn’t show up on either Askmid or Gov both showing possible foreign vehicle
