Amphibian charity Froglife is looking for volunteer toad patrollers to monitor the safe crossing of toads and other amphibians on roads across the Island. At a total of 4 sites, namely Shalfleet, Chale Green, Lower Road in Alverstone and Sandy Way in Shorwell mass migration of toads across local roads is seen, however, there are only volunteers – to warn motorists – at 1 of those locations. The amphibians tend to move after dusk between February and March to and from a breeding lake on either side of the carriageway in question. In one case, in Bath, highways bosses closed a road on the outskirts of the city for 6-weeks to allow the safe passage of frogs, toads and newts. No need for that here, Island Roads close most of the roads on a regular basis already, toads or no toads.
Driving from Ryde to Sandown this morning and all three roads at the Yarbridge cross-roads had Road Closed signs.
Couldn’t Island Roads put up illuminated signs to warn drivers in these locations for a few months? Would be good PR, and be safer as the kindly people are at risk of the loons now running drugs etc at night on unpoliced roads.
Those who ignore a lit up sign will likely ignore a yellow coated helper imo.
A worthy cause whatever method is used.
Hundreds of them in Adgestone. Sadly loads are being squashed in this area on upper and lower road.

In chale green there was a sign last year saying slow down toads/ frogs crossing, it made me slow down and I still do and keep an eye out for them!
Quite a dangerous occupation because according to the echo it appears that vehicles are usually driven very unsafely on the island!
Potentially giving up your life for a toad. A noble endeavour!
They should learn the highway code stop look and listen like we do ,but then I expect the toads are to distracted on there mobiles to stop and think for a minute
Why when roads re laid or any work done put pips under road for safe crossing ?
