Letter to the editor – 14th October 2022
“We reside near the current works on Queens Road in Ryde and despite the wall being finished this week, it appears that for us and many others on the road our experience is sadly far from over.
“Due to a cracked sewer and issues with grouting that was used to strengthen the foundations of the wall inadvertently entering the sewer 2 months ago, Southern Water are pumping raw sewage over the ground to bypass the damaged section.
“As a result of these works, the smell of raw sewage is permanenting up through our drains, sinks, shower and toilets at regular intervals meaning we have to evacuate our home, especially at meal times. Residents will be aware of the stench which can be smelt as far as West Street but in our case it is in our home making us feel unwell and affecting our health. We can’t open our windows, have friends or family round and often have to leave the property for long periods of time for the smell to go away.
“I have attempted to speak to Southern Water on numerous occasions who blame it on the contractors but it’s no longer their responsibility as the wall is now completed. We are then told that it is likely to be another three weeks before anyone is on-site meaning we have put up with the noxious smell and the inconvenience of the road closure for over 3 months – as these works started in July!
“Whilst we appreciate the need for these urgent works to repair the damaged sewer and the subsequent road closure it appears no one is prepared to take responsibility and give us the residents any updates on progress with regards to the sewer being repaired.
“Our neighbour who is 97 has had to move out due to the stench and our other neighbours who are in their 80s feel trapped in their own home due to the noise and smell.
“All we want is an update on how and when these works will be completed and if our issues will be resolved by the solution they have in place”.

I have spoken with one person who lives on the esplanade and every so often gets a foul sewage stench through their kitchen sink – so it is far more widespread than west street
and..neighbours who are in their 80s feel trapped in their own home due to the noise and smell.
the person I spoke with who lives on the esplanade is at their wits end with the endless drilling and racket from the bus station and road changes taking place, that the council have imposed on them, without compensation.
you all should get compensation for the misery this is causing it is not right at all that you have to put up with this, if contacting SW isnt helping try Bob Sealy
Sewage on the Island is a major problem, yet the idiots on the Island want to
keep building more properties.
Lol
Currently doing this in St Helens, dodgy builder next door has been pouring cement down the highways drain (illegal) fed up of getting cement in my brand new car and they covered it the other day trying to jet wash down! Wish I could put a stop to it!! It’s been nearly 2 yrs of hassle next door
Who’s job was it island roads or southern waters ?
Island roads were doing the wall
Yes and they filled the sewer with concrete! They are not fit for purpose
It is impossible for a odour to come through sinks and toliets. There is a water trap or ubend to prevent this in every house.
They must be unlucky i live right outside and apart from the hum of the machines i have had no problem at all.
Get hold of Meridian TV and see if they can help in naming and shaming those who should be putting this disgusting and life threatening for some episode at the top of their priority list. All those affected hopefully will obtain some form of compensation but this is disgusting, I have experienced SW raw sewerage disposal before and the smell is indescribable and nauseous to say the least.
Normal smell in Ryde.
Island toads bodging island roads say no more.More bodge jobs will be along shortly.
I read that vacating the property for long periods of time allows the smell to disappear. Equally smells coming through sinks and toilets will occur proximal to the u bend. Given the fact that meal times are particularly bad all the evidence points to an alternative source for the stench.
