Crowds once again gathered at memorials across the Isle of Wight this morning to mark Remembrance Sunday, paying tribute to those who paid the ultimate price and all those who have fought for Queen and country.
Islanders stood side by side and fell silent at 11:00 in towns and villages across the land, with Last Post and Reveille heard resonating throughout the streets.
The main service took place in Newport’s St Thomas’ Square, where dignitaries were joined by around 1,000 local residents and veterans to pay their respects to those who fought for our freedom.
Those present included Lord-Lieutenant Susie Sheldon, High Sheriff James Attril and Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely (in military uniform), alongside several senior councillors and representatives of our local emergency services.
In Ryde, a short service was held at All Saints’ Church before a parade formed and made its way to the war memorial at Lind Street. Here the act of Remembrance was observed with the parade marshal giving the exhortation and Kohima and Denise Tizard from the Wight Diamonds played the Last Post and Reveille, the standards dipped in salute. A bag piped also played out.
The wreath laying was led by Mr Charles Chapman, Mayor of Ryde Michael Lilley and Mr Brian Harris (Royal British Legion). However, the service was slightly marred by vehicles parked in front of the memorial and along Lind Street – a road that is normally made no parking ahead of the annual service.

The owners of the cars parked in front & near the Ryde shine showed NO respect at all,,
Blame the council then, not the car owners, they should of put out cones or barriers to stop people parking.
It’s not the council’s fault they DIDNT drive the cars
The cars should be towed away and any fines donated to the RBL
Why if they are legally parked within parking bays. If there weren’t barriers or parking restrictions you can’t fine them.
Blame the council would have thought they would make their car parks free just for today as a thank you
They need to have a microphone at Ryde we couldn’t hear anything.
this is poor planning on the councils part – if they are going to hold this type of event, then they need to ensure that those parking spaces are closed off at least a day before and notices in the area stating that cars will be towed by 0900 sunday morning if left there.
not too difficult is it
the car owners saw empty, open parking spaces and have made use of them – perfectly within their rights – councils fault
Spot on. It’s one day a year isn’t it, make the effort.
If was normally in past years made no parking ,by the council it was the council to blame here, simple.
Typical of this totally useless council that we are lumbered with. Absolutely no respect or thought for anyone or anything except themselves. Sack the lot, right up to the very top. And at the same time get rid of those ******* that insist on driving around with lights flashing. We were trying to remember the things that real people did for us, and not you load of muppets.
