Emergency services are in attendance at a road traffic collision on The Downs between Knighton and Downend this afternoon (Tuesday).
The incident occurred at around 15:45 at the junction with Newport Shute and has involved a coach and a Peugeot 206 CC.
It appears the car has collided with the side of the coach which is full of holidaymakers.
Paramedics from Isle of Wight Ambulance are the only blue light service on scene.
The road is blocked just past Newport Shute towards Downend with drivers having to divert locally.
Traffic is heavy in the area.
It is believed that no serious injuries have been sustained.
UPDATE @ 17:00 – The incident has been cleared and the road is now open once again.

Another hopeless island driver. How could they miss seeing a bus?
Because most island drivers are idiots….
No just you
Wile you are denying reality, I’m having a lovely meal in the Queens Head pub opposite the Whiches Coven in our lovely village, however, you need to face reality, island driving are a disgrace….
If you are in a pub having a lovely meal in the New Forest why are you posting on the Island Echo.
Seems a bit sad and obsessed to me
Very true, most of them also park on pavements
they do not understand road safety.
Majority of Island drivers are Numpties
Alot of these so called island drivers are actually from the mainland and think they can drive like their on the motorway. Can’t handle our unique roads lol

Please, please tell me there’s more to your pitiful existence than this? You offer nothing on here, and never have done. You don’t even live here anymore…or do you? Either way, you need to find something meaningful in your life, you really do!
What is wrong with what Burley driver said. The standard of driving on the island is poor.
I agree Rob. The standard of driving is very poor for some How can you not see a great big white coach is beyond me!
Maybe people are taking in the magnificent views up there and not paying attention to the road in front of them. If it’s not speeding, it’s driving without due care and attention.
Because you see something doesn’t mean you can avoid hitting it. If it did there wouldn’t be any accidents, 98% see what they hit
In your opinion then, only island residents should comment on IE ???…who the hell do you think you are?…The Thought Police ??..
Where did I say you shouldn’t comment? The underlying point though, is why are you still remotely interested now you’ve move away (praise the Lord!). Sorry to hammer home the point, but every time you do comment, which is far too often, you just make a fool of yourself, and show everyone here what a complete simpleton you are!
Maybe it is The Who’s “Magic Bus” on Speed or Acid, and suddenly appeared from nowhere, as far as the car driver is concerned.
Ever thought it might not be their fault?
As in this case it wasnt. Dumbass
Another island resident that shouldn’t comment without knowing the facts.
You seem to have witnessed it, so what happened
Welcome to the island
That should be the strapline for an island driving fails slideshow, displayed on those promotional screens on the Wightlink ferries.
Obviously too busy looking at the lovely scenery….
know the car driver??? could do with some parts!!
Stuart, it will be ready tonight if you would like to buy some?
wrong person i think . nob head
No way jamie we’ll know you sell drugs good luck see you soon
not sure you know what you are on about
The collision happened after the driver of the 206 took evasive action after a twat in a black car pulled out of Newport Shute in front of it . The car fled the scene after causing what could have been far worse .
Ok so the dumbass in the pug decided it was better to crash into a coach rather than a car!!! Very sensible
That may well be the best decision depending on the location of the other car and it’s direction and speed.
Dash cam footage shows the cause being someone ‘pulling out’ of the Shute , shame your dad didn’t.
That story sounds like a load of old feces to me. Where is the black car supposed to have gone?
Coaches travelling in convey over the downs on such narrow roads not a great idea!!!!
Vehicles of that size should try and avoid the downs, it’s very narrow especially if they were going to go through Ashey, just asking for a collision / wing mirrors knocked off
I little surprised ( or not ) at the comments. As the coach appears to be where it should be why the anti coach driver stuff. Oh and by the way if the road tax is paid he has every right to be on that road. no restrictions.
I was brought up on the island ,and had my 1st driving test on the island,i spent time drive buses before and after my RAF Service.and now retired.BUT we were always told if one could drive large vehicle on the island ,then you can drive anywhere in Uk.But the coach drivers always have full respect for our island roads. So seems the car driver was in total fault here, and so cars must always give way to coaches/buses and lorries whist drive on the island, yes car drivers must always give way. to large vehicles, thats what drivers are always told ,car driver at fault.
If Mike above is correct then Police should be looking for a third driver who fled the scene
Hopefully there is dashcam footage
It’s a national speed limit road that can have some narrow parts, why don’t the smart coach drivers take the main roads around the island?
Rule H1 of the Highway Code introduces the “Hierarchy of road users”, which outlines the priority of different types of road users.
The rule’s wording is as follows: “…those in charge of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others.”
The order from most to least vulnerable in an accident – large goods and passenger vehicles having the MOST responsibility.
Looking at the photos the bus behind is over the white line
How much closer could it have got to the bank then?
Shows what you know ,
i want to buy the car for parts if you are reading this …car owner ..may as well sell it now , i have a black 02 , 206 need a few small bits and 1 black and red seat …. . thanks
Still selling your drugs scumbag
