Following the repossession of the main complex at the Gurnard Pines site on 30th January 2023, the building is to change its name to ‘The Phoenix Centre’ and 2 new companies have been launched focusing on entertainment and leisure activities respectively.
As previously reported by Island Echo, on 30th January the owners of Gurnard Pines took back possession of the site’s central complex as a result of the leaseholder not paying their rent, insurance or utilities.
The locks were changed, and the gym, swimming pool, and events space was all closed.
But today (Friday), it has been announced that good progress has been made and despite the still uncertain future of the site, 2 new companies have been appointed to run parts of the venue going forward.
Phoenix Knights Limited has taken over the entertainment section of the property and is looking to provide entertainment to the Island, initially running every fortnight with new dates coming soon. The plan is for ticketed events to be showcased with comedy, an 80s night, and an evening dining experience planned in the coming months – should all go to plan.
The other company, The Phoenix Zone Limited, has taken over the gym sections of the property and will be launching soon with a view to opening on 6th March with plenty of classes, including Les Mills classes, in addition to several other sessions that have been tailored to suit the needs of the existing members.
Both of these areas are currently undergoing significant improvements which will enhance the experience for all visitors.
However there is some more sad news.
Unfortunately, after extensive research and speaking with potential tenants, it has become apparent that the swimming pool is simply too expensive to retain because with utility costs rising again in April once the government discount ceases, the monthly running cost of the pool alone would be in excess of £230,000 p.a. and generates only £30,000 p.a. from swim schools and local clubs meaning the annual loss would be in the region of £200,000.
The use by previous gym members was a very small proportion and whilst the group have done their best to find a way of retaining the pool, the increase required in membership fees would be so excessive, the public simply would not be able to afford it just cover costs.
The pool area will be re-purposed as a multi-functional area and we are investigating how the space can be best used. There are lots of options in the melting pot, with some of those that are being considered are squash, badminton, basketball, indoor football, futsal and instructor-led exercise training.

My thoughts exactly – what’s with the sweeping statement ‘the public wouldn’t be able to afford it’ (increase in membership) how does this idiot know what folk can and can’t afford!!!
I won’t be using the place…. not if Mr Prosser is in control. Give it a few months and he will double the price of membership. Anything to line his own pockets…..
