A survey by national sandwich brand Subway has revealed that 70% of parents on the Isle of Wight feel like a taxi service for their children, whilst 33% of parents feel like passing ships in the night.
Subway commissioned the report to show how far dedicated parents are driving to after-school clubs while making sure their children are kept well fed with nutritious snacks. The report has found that kids from the South are driven over 1,114 miles a year to after school activities, the equivalent of a trip from London to Rome.
The report found that on average parents on the Isle of Wight drive their children 20 miles per week to after school activities, with 1 in 4 driving over 30 miles. Out of those surveyed, 1 in 5 said they never get a day off from taxing their children around.
Parents on the Island make the smallest number of trips to after school activities, averaging just 4 a week. However, a huge 73% said that they help out friends or relatives by taking their children to activities.
This dedication to making sure the kids get to enjoy their after-school activities is taking its toll on families lifestyle with 40% of parents admitting they provide their child/children with food to eat but do not eat anything themselves. In addition, 40% of parents admit they miss dinner completely or eat late because they are taxiing their kids to clubs.
Over 60% of parents on Isle of Wight are worried about how nutritious the food is they are giving to their children on these trips.
Subway spokesperson Hemina Haque commented:
“These busy, hard-working and dedicated parents just don’t stop when it comes to taking their kids to after school activities, and it can be tough to make sure that everyone has the fuel they need after school. We offer parents and kids a nutritious, convenient and great value option with something for everyone to keep the whole family happy.”
The top 3 after school activities on the Isle of Wight are Brownies (60%), Drama (50%) and Football (40%).
