Bembridge Fort went back in time when it welcomed the cast members from Journey’s End in full WWI battledress for a photo shoot with Island-based photographer, Julian Winslow.
The cast members posed the same way that the Isle of Wight Rifles did over 100 years ago.
It was a poignant reminder of the death of so many men, young and old, in the ‘Great War’ as it was known. Many of the Isle of Wight Rifles didn’t return from that terrible conflict.
Isle of Wight-based professional theatre company, Theatre Reviva!, will be staging Journey’s End at the Apollo Theatre from Tuesday 1st to Saturday 5th November. Set in an extraordinarily realistic frontline dug out during the First World War, the story plays out over 4 days in March 1918, as 5 British Officers wait for an upcoming attack.
Full of beautifully observed humanity and understated heroism, R.C.Sherriff drew on his own personal experiences in the trenches whilst a Captain in the East Surrey Regiment. The first-hand authenticity told through a funny, exciting, shocking, and poignant script has kept the play, and subsequent films, a triumph for a full 90 years.
The production commemorates the end of the Great War and recalls the sacrifices of those who never returned. It’s especially poignant now, as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine. Lest we forget.

The ONLY good thing about Nuclear war is the rich and leaders lives will be deeply affected, so far less likely to escalate than if it were mostly working people dying hideously
Humans have a very arrogant attitude towards our planet. We have, as a species, been on this planet no more than 300,000 to 400,000 years out of a total time that complex life has existed on the planet of around 500 million years. That is less than 0.1%.
When we humans talk about us destroying the planet they are really talking about us destroying our own civilization and, possibly, species.
A few thousand years after we wipe ourselves out the planet will be perfectly fine and free of a rather nasty parasite.
You are such a cheery soul England.
