A community skate jam was recently held at Freshwater skatepark to raise funds and awareness for the new skatepark, pushing to create bigger and better facilities for this ever-growing Olympic sport in the West Wight.
The weather for 21st August was looking awful and had heavily rained all night and morning, but the skate community turned out in force and proceeded to try and dry the ramps using towels and squeegees and by 11:00 the event was on.
A fantastic day was had by all ages with smiles on every face!
Top work by Hamish Fleming making and pulling the event together and superbly hosted as always supporting the growth of the sport anyway he can.
Hamish Fleming, who is working to support the growth of the sport in anyway he can, said:
“We started with mini challenges such as “hippy jump” and “ramp to ramp” with all ages and abilities taking part. Passers-by stopped to check it out as there seems to be a new understanding since the Olympics got the world’s attention.
“Further enthusiasm for the new park was demonstrated by the amazing and generous prizes donated from businesses across the island such as Freshwater Parish Council, Craft Vegan Pizza Ryde, Reaper Surf Co, Teemill, Rapanui, Westwood Signs, Steve Miles Artist, Canopy and Wight Trash.
“The event was captured on an insect-like drone and 360 camera, flown and shot by Steve Martin, giving a futuristic feel as the drone flew amongst the skaters. The vibe was rad; it felt like a new beginning for this corner of Skate Island. I can’t wait to welcome everyone to Canopy coming soon”.
At one point there were around 100 people watching and/or taking part, with £128.25 raised in donations.

Great stuff and we need more places where they can blow of steam. Thatchers lot closed all the youth spaces in the 80’s. Time to rebuild.
Agreed! all the towns need a skatepark!
A decent one.. not just one ramp.
