Shanklin & Sandown Rowing Club Junior crews again enjoyed a successful regatta with 5 wins and 2 3rd place finishes at the 3rd regatta of the new season on Saturday (17th May).
The Boys J14 quad of Alex Collier, Connie Batley-Smith, Josh Batchelor, Digby Ridgewell and Paul Gamble (cox) secured a comfortable victory as did their female counterparts of Mariana Hare, Fiona Brookes, both of Newport RC, Martha Eggleton and Olivia Mumberson, with Esme Walters coxing.
In the J14 doubles event, the club also took the top spots in both races with Batchelor & Ridgewell winning the boys’ race and Mumberson & Eggleton the girls’, whilst the J16 girls single sculls race was won by Connie Batley-Smith.

These wins, coupled with the 2 3rd place finishes in the J16 quad races, meant the club won the aggregate cup for the most successful club in the Junior events for the 3rd time in 4 years.
Esme Walters had an excellent regatta, taking 2nd place in the ladies Novice sculls race, her best result to date, and a 3rd-place finish in the Ladies pair with Anna Scott.
There were also 4th place finishes for the Men’s Novice and the Ladies Junior fours.
The Novice Ladies four of Anna Visser, Chloe Walker, Theodora Travers, Ruth Faithfull and Jane Denby-Roach just missed out on a place in the final, finishing fourth in their heat and the Masters Ladies finished 5th in their race.
Ryde Rowing Club had a reasonably successful day at Poole Regatta.
Pride of place went to the Women Coastal Four of Eva Gordon, Alexis Owen, Emily Kellerman, Fiona Owen with Ruby Reed coxing, who finished 2nd in their heat and went on to win the final claiming their 2nd Hants & Dorset Championship point of the season following their win at Ryde the previous week.
Further success came for the J16 Boys Coxed Quad of Joe Bird. Charlie Watts, Cameron D’Arcy, Max Locke with Harry Watts coxing who also won their race.
The club’s Open Junior Senior Coxed Four of Isaac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Ben Sanderson and Yogi Ashworth with Mai Reed coxing finished 3rd in their final.
The club also had an Open Coastal Junior Four competing consisting of Cameron Darcy, Yogi Ashworth, Ben Robotham and Joe Bird with Ruby Reed coxing once again who finished 4th in their Final.
In the small boat events the J16 Boys Double of Max Locke and Joe Bird were pipped on the line to finish 2nd behind host Club Poole in one of the closest races of the day.
In the Open Coastal Junior Pairs, Yogi Ashworth and Ben Robotham finished in 6th place in the Final and the Women’s Junior Pair of Alexia Owen and Emily Kellerman also finished in 6th place.
In the single sculling events Charlie Watts won the Boys J16 Single Sculls quite comfortably. Ben Sanderson finished 6th in the Open Coastal Junior Sculls event. Isaac Gibson sculled really well to finish 2nd in his heat gaining a place in the final where he finished 5th and in the Women’s Novice Scull event Stella Baisley finished 4th in her heat.
Finally, Ruby Read was the Regatta’s cox of the day for her performance coxing Ryde’s Open Junior Coxed Four and the winning Women’s Coxed Four.
Newport also sent 6 crews to Poole last weekend.
The 2nd week of the Hants & Dorset regatta season brought perfect rowing weather, a marked improvement on the previous week.
The day started with U14 rowers of Mariana Hare and Fiona Brookes joining with Olivia Mumberson and Martha Egerton from Shanklin, coxed by Esme Walters to race in the U14 quad. Despite only having one practice session ahead of the race, they won by a clear margin.
The women’s Novice crew of Flora Lockey, Julia Coulson, Grace Garner, and Helen Hopper, coxed by Fiona Brookes, rowed well in their heat to make the final. They made a strong start in the final, turning 3rd at the buoy, but faded in the last 600m to finish 6th.
The Open Novice crew of Freddie Hollis, Riv Szawiel, Max Gasper (in his first race) and Eric Williams, coxed by Fiona Brookes also reached their final. They had a poor start, and couldn’t make up the ground, also finishing 6th.
The Junior Pair of Jake Garner and Nathaniel Hamilton finished 3rd in their final. They raced again with Boris Hare and Connor Garner, coxed by Mariana Hare, in the Open Junior final. They has a close race from the start with the BTC crew, who had won the event the previous week at Shanklin. Newport pushed them all the way to the line, finishing just a length down.
The Masters 50 Open event was contested by Paul Gamble ( Shanklin), Chris Clarke, Julie Clarke and Harry Hare, coxed by Mariana Hare finishing 6th.
