Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club enjoyed a successful day at the prestigious Henley Sculls, where 8 Island crews competed over the challenging 3km course.
The regatta, held on the famous Henley Royal Regatta stretch, featured strong headwinds and tough competition in one of the most hotly contested head races of the winter season. Despite the testing conditions, the Shanklin crews produced some impressive performances across multiple divisions.
In the morning division, the ladies’ double of Theodora Travers and Evie Crew delivered an excellent row to secure third place in their category, while the men’s masters double of Gary Burch and Paul Gamble made a strong competitive debut, finishing fourth. The men’s J18 double of Tobin Green and Isaac King gained momentum throughout their race but finished down the field in one of the most competitive events of the day.
Division 2 saw an outstanding victory for Connie Batley-Smith in the ladies’ J15 single sculls, winning her event by an impressive nine seconds. The club’s other scullers also recorded solid results — Esme Walters took fourth in the ladies’ single, Gary Burch placed eighth in the men’s masters single, while Rose Collier and Annabelle Steward finished 10th and 11th respectively in the ladies’ J16 singles.
Shanklin Sandown will now turn their attention to the upcoming Head of Medina, hosted by Newport Rowing Club, in the coming weeks.
