UPDATED: SERIOUS COLLISION CLOSES MAIN ROAD IN LAKE

6d6a4a94-2f4b-40dc-a3de-69561fb6eb52A serious collision involving a cyclist has seen the main road through Lake closed this morning (Saturday). Emergency service crews were called to Lake Hill near the junction with Sandown Road at just after 09:30 following reports that a cyclist had been hit by car. Several resources from Isle of Wight Ambulance Service as well as St John’s Ambulance descended on the scene, giving treatment to those involved on the crossing opposite Tesco. The casualty has been conveyed by land ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital, but a heavy emergency service presence remains. The involved pushbike – which has seemingly sustained minimal damage – has been left in situ at the side of the road. Cffe879f-387e-44dd-b9db-3935b34381b8   Police have closed the road between Lake Green Road and The Fairway. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being, with it unclear when Lake Hill will reopen. UPDATE @ 10:45 – Lake Hill is expected to remain closed for what Police are describing as ‘the forseeable’.   UPDATE @ 13:30 – Lake Hill has now reopened. UPDATE ON MONDAY (1ST APRIL) – Isle of Wight Police have said that the injuries sustained by the cyclist are less serious that first feared. Deada3bb-2940-4916-9afa-7580be245ca0

Safest place to be is the middle of the lane, prevents close passes from incompetent drivers.

Hi Bob I think you need to check the new highway code rules about bicycles and pedestrians.

Totally agree. I was caught up in this . I was on my way back from ventnor and more than once going in the opposite direction I saw multiple cyclists , some riding side by side taking it leisurely chatting together as if on a country run then a main road, with a huge tail back behind them.
No wonder accidents happen.
But saying that I hope all involved are ok.
All need to respect each other on the road.

Cyclists are a law unto themselves
I am fed up seeing them ride in large groups
side by side holding each others hands,
Some are even too busy on their phones

They are a danger to motorists

Yes, I hop the rider is ok, ..I was behind a driver last week, no signals and driving too fast for the bad weather conditions, a danger to us all, sometime drivers think they own the road!

Bob, you clearly haven’t read the new Highway Code that came into affect in 2022. Cyclists have the right to use the middle of the road.

I hope the cyclist is okay, this is definitely the worst junction on the island, would work much better as a roundabout

Agreed this junction is not vehicle or bike friendly. You often have to rely on other motorists to let you out, or you have to muscle your way out whilst looking rapidly in multiple directions. I’ve said it many times before, cyclists should wear bright clothing, not this black lycra that seems to be worn as a fashion statement. You really can be difficult to spot, especially when there is lots of traffic flying around. Anyway whatever the reason for this accident, i do hope the rider is not seriously hurt.

Solution to me is simple: stop cyclists using the roads. Before you jump down my throat: I am a cyclist. There is an abundance of cycle tracks on the island that will take you wherever you want to go. It’s the idiots who think they are Lance Armstrong doing the Tour de France that cause the issues. Riding down the busiest roads on the island at peak times causing major hold ups and accidents as seen above. Use the cycle paths, it’s what they’re for. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Used to be a path from behind morrisons that ran along the back of broadlea school and came out at berry Hill, then probably up roseway, cross the fairway and through los altos Park and follow station ave

Nonsense. Tell me the cycle path between ryde and shanklin. The short and infrequent paths inbetween, covered in glass, rubbish, thorns, and disgruntled pedestrians with their dogs. Il take the road as the law allows, thankyou. Let’s look out for each other. Hope the casualty is OK.

A couple of things I don’t get about your proposal Steve: How do I cover the two miles from my house to the nearest cycle track? I suppose I could sling the bike into the back of my gas guzzler for that short trip but that seems to defeat the object of a bicycle.

And we must remember that cyclists are on the road by right; motorists only by licence.

The same applies to walking upstairs people should keep to the left

Try walking down the stairs in Busy Bee Garden Centre, idiots
walk up on the right side, if everyone kept to the left the flow would work

What an utter stupid post. Why not stop cars using the roads? Yeah I know, stupid eh? Why does it have to be an us and them scenario? As most cyclists are also car drivers, they know how to drive in a considerate manner and not in a ‘I must get there in the quickest way possible, without regard for anyone else who maybe on the road’ attitude. When a cyclist is injured it’s usually because a car driver wasn’t paying enough attention. However, as I know nothing of this incident, I’m not saying that is the case and hope all those affected are ok.

Glad to see a cyclist like yourself echoing this opinion. As you say, normally cyclists will jump down your throat at a comment like this but I totally agree. You / they are risking their own lives, to be honest, unless wearing hi-vis, lights at night, and a helmet.

Where are all these cycle paths? I cycle myself but am only aware of a handful. I am all for using cycle paths – just need to know where they are!

Very much doubt you are a cyclist. If you were you’d know that you can’t get everywhere using cycle paths, and you’d realise not all paths are suitable for all bikes.

The problem is the mindset of some, including you, who believe roads are solely for cars. All you are doing here is perpetuating a rhetoric against a group of vulnerable road users. There are examples of bad behaviour across all road users. Try to have a rational thought before playing to the stalls, there’s a good fellow.

I think most cyclists would be happy to use the cycle route network… well, that is when they are properly surfaced and maintained, free from flooded areas and dogs off leads, oh, and horses rearing up, and joggers with headphones on who cant hear you ringing your bell and are running in the middle of the path. The tracks don’t take people ‘wherever they want to go’, that is a silly thing to say, for example, that well known Newport to Yarmouth cycle track… oh wait, there isn’t one! I’m not jumping down your throat, as you put it, just stating some actual facts Steve, and you don’t know what caused the cyclist in the article to have an nasty accident! As a ‘cyclist’ I’m sure you’ll wish the poor rider a speedy recovery.

Solution is simple to me. Stop cars using the roads. Before you jump down my throat, I am a car driver. There is an abundance of buses on the island that will take you wherever you want to go, or you could cycle. It’s the idiots who think they’re Lewis Hamilton that cause the issues. Driving down all the roads too fast, not paying attention or under the influence of something. Use the buses, it’s what they’re there for. Please refer to the daily stories on this fine news page if you require further evidence of the amount of accidents cars cause.

buses on the island that will take you wherever you want to go” …………. unless you want to go to Havenstreet or Porchfield or (Parkhurst) Forest Road – NO buses on those routes.

You are 110% correct, until the Island moves into the
21st century and install Cycle Lanes it is not safe for cyclists

Have you see the Idiots cycling round the island
They all cycle side by side holding each others hands
P*ssing off motorists.

I despise cyclists.

Many of these idiots even cycle along
Sandown Esplanade against oncoming vehicles and they do the same round
Ryde Boating Lake.

The Law does not apply to them, and they know it!
Makes me sick

I respect old school cyclists who cy le with respect, not many of them
around thesedays

Sounds like a fatal accident. Let’s hope not but Lake Hill has way too much traffic , especially in the holiday season and it would be far better to remove all speed bumps in Perowne way to allow cars heading to Ryde / Brading to share the burden by using this route and ease the burden of Lake Hill and the Broadway route which would then take the Sandown traffic.

Cheap and easy to try such to see if eases the problem there.

It didn’t help this morning with people parking there cars right opposite another car to go into the shop and houses that have drives parking there cars on the road .Cars parked right on the approach road to the station parked right on corner the usual 4×4 blue one parked on double yellow lines was making traffic from persons way hard to get through

Hope all turns out ok. Police and Island Roads, when you close road do you not think about traffic management?. 3hrs after accident traffic is still backed up Perowne Way to Lake because lights at bridge only let 3 out, then traffic traveling from Ryde etc is heading as far as The Heights and being turned round to head back to Perowne Way. Traffic management at the lights by Perowne Way could move traffic flow better etc.

I’m not saying there was a cycle track here but where at all possible cyclist should be enforced to use them for everyone’s safety,,but they don’t.
If I were to drive my car on the cycle track I’d get done for it , so come on cyclist do ya self a favour and keep your self safer by keeping off the roads as much as possible ,as your a bloody pain in the arse,,
And get insurance for any damage or injury to others you might do which includes vehicles

Dangerous! Said before that there’s far too much going on here in such a small area. 2 bus stops (in my opinion need to go), pedestrian crossing, two junctions (one by Tesco needs shutting off) from fairway and another one on the other side of the road; Tesco, school kids etc etc. another Accident will happen soon. Island roads / iw council – take note.

I have to say that the traffic management was chaos. One officer sent us down Lake Hill to get to Shanklin, then we met the roadblock surrounded by confused and trapped cars. We asked the officer how to get to Shanklin and he said , (I kid you not), ‘use your map luv’!
