Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has objected to plans that would allow for 117 new homes to be built alongside a new Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) in Gurnard.
In his objection, Bob referred to the plans as an ‘unnecessary loss of agricultural land’.
The development is proposed on a greenfield site off Cordelia Gardens, Tuttons Hill and Cockleton Lane closing the gap between Gurnard, Cowes and Northwood.
Mr Seely attended a public meeting in Gurnard Village Hall on 27th September which highlighted the plans to residents.
He said:
“Having looked at the plans and listened to feedback from residents, I have submitted my own objections to these plans.
“This is exactly the sort of development that we don’t need. It’s not in the right place, the infrastructure is not there, and it doesn’t meet the local housing need.
“The proposed SANG seems to me to have been put forward to soften the reaction to this development, but it’s completely unnecessary.
“We can’t allow developers to continue to concrete over our countryside removing natural boundaries that separate villages. This has got to stop.”
In his objections, Mr Seely also said the proposal was contrary to the aims of the Gurnard Neighbourhood Plan and didn’t do enough to support local education, healthcare and community facilities.
The Island’s MP has been urging the Isle of Wight Council to agree a new Island Plan as quickly as possible to allow for more controlled development across the Island.
Islanders wishing to submit objections to the plans (23/01430/FUL) are encouraged to do so by Friday 6th October.

His time would be better spent getting Whitelink to lower their prices and stop their staff from taking sickies or cancelling sailings due to low number of customers…
My thoughts exactly.
I object to paying extortionate Ferrh fares for a 5 mile crossing.
Come on Bob do something about the Ferry Fares we are being charged for
such a short crossing.
Easy Jet need to run a Ferry Service, it would be much cheaper.
Oh how lovely useless bob is sticking up for the stuck up rich gits in gurnard.most kind.
Don’t stop no other unessesary housing eleswhere.we can copeno more, but as long as the toffs are OK
Mr Seely, your comments apply to the whole of the Island, not just your pet areas!
An “unnecessary loss of Agricultural land”. Mr Seely don’t you know a hard working family were thrown off their working farm, or if you did, I don’t remember you objecting to that!!
Nope. Quite happy for a couple of thousand new homes, couldn’t care less about those farmers. Don’t speak for everybody.
what on his friends door step i don’t think so
And if he still a mp this time next year he will be all for it. Don’t be fooled people
He’s only saying this to keep hes seat in the bext election
Bob doesn’t “welcome” this then, maybe his new word is “object”, typical, rich area and he pops up from the undergrowth, different if it is anywhere else though isn’t it. Why doesn’t he just say “I welcome new development in Ryde and Newport and Sandown”, you can’t spout about “concreting” over the island and not object to it 100%. The man is a complete moron.
Sausage roll Seeley strikes again!
People objecting because Mr Seely is objecting?
So, the fact that he’s actually coming out against more houses on the Island (does it really matter where?) comes second to people’s political views?
I trust that none of the people commenting here about Mr Seely will themselves be objecting to houses elsewhere on the Island?
He’s coming out against houses being built in more affluent areas.
As has previously been said, not a whimper from him about developments on greenfield sites in Parkhurst or Gunville. Or booting a tennant farmer off his land, or the huge greenfield development at Pennyfeathers.
It’s not about political views. It about cronyism and elitism.
It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Bob will be objecting to everything in West Wight over the next year to keep his voters sweet. East Wight won’t get the same attention ofc with the exception of his Tory mates in Bembridge.
Because they are the people who might still vote for him despite the depredations he and his party have inflicted most of us
He didn’t object to the 100 odd sheds being built in Godshill either
For what it’s worth he objected to all the recent developments in Gunville ..
Maybe better to realise the infrastructure cannot cope with what we have !!!
Without any more unaffordable housing, or housing built on Greenfield sites….
Are we hoping to be re elected soon.
…?????
No chance…
Why should his objection carry any more weight than Joe public?
It doesn’t but have you objected? Has anyone on here objected? Have any of you objected to any of the recently proposed developments? You do realise that you need to actually contact the planning department to make a reasoned objection rather than just moaning on IE.
Does seldom seen even kniw where Gurnard is?
Has been Seely. He’s had his 5 minutes of fame and is now nothing more than a void caretaker. His political career, if you could call that a career is over, just like the vast majority of his soon to be obscure party. We don’t want your opinion Bob. No-one lends any weight to what you blurt out anyway.
