The body of a woman has tragically been pulled from the sea in Shanklin this morning (Sunday).
It was around 09:40 that HM Coastguard was alerted to a possible person in the water off the Esplanade, prompting the launch of Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat – with Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter scrambled from Lee-on-Solent.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Police were quickly on scene at the far end of Shanklin seafront, soon joined by the lifeboat and helicopter.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service mobilised an ambulance crew, critical care paramedic and an operational commander to the incident.
The female was located and pulled ashore, but has since been pronounced dead.
Detectives from Newport CID have arrived in Shanklin as investigations into the circumstances of the death get underway.
Part of the beach has been cordoned off by the Coastguard.
UPDATE @ 15:01 – Police have confirmed that the body is that of a woman in her 70s.
Formal identification is yet to take place, however her next of kin have been have been informed and a file will be prepared for the coroner in relation to this unexpected death.
