Firefighters have extinguished a fire in the open in Sandown this evening (Tuesday), which is highly suspected to have been started maliciously.
Crews from Sandown and Shanklin have been tackling the 30x12m scrubland fire in the old Southern Water storage yard off College Close.
A total of 7 seats of fire have been identified by firefighters, who have used hose reels to extinguish the flames and dampen down the area.
The incident, which began at just gone 20:00, is being treated as a suspect arson by unknown individuals. A witness in the area has described to Island Echo hearing 2 male voices shortly before the fire developed.
The affected area backs onto a significant area of marshland, which this time of the year dries out and becomes a fire hazard.

Run out of hotels to burn, now have to do it for free I guess.
Lets hope they suffer third degree burns and die in agony, but they won’t, just laugh about it to their mates and their ONLY punishment IF caught will be a stern face fireman and Police officer telling them how dangerous it is. Who they will take the urine out of soon as free to go.
See this charity kept trash for what it is.
These scum who are doing this need catching. Hotels, now our outdoor spaces. They must be sub normal. This act goes beyond being thick. They do it for a ‘laugh’
If the perpetrators turn out to be mainlanders with no ties to the island, they need to be ‘deported’ back to where they crawled from and banned from returning to the island.
