Scooby the Bassett Hound has been successfully reunited with his owner after being ‘detained’ by Police in Wootton.
The story began yesterday evening (Sunday) when Andy Dale was out walking his 3 dogs on a bridleway in Wootton. Unfortunately, a group of cyclists came speeding up behind Andy, startling poor Scooby. Having actually been hurt by a bicycle tyre the much-loved Bassett Hound slipped his collar and made his escape.
Being so close to home, Andy took the other 2 dogs – Ruby and Penny – back to safety and ventured out on a search of the local area. Meanwhile, Scooby had been picked up by the local constabulary near to The Sloop Inn at Wootton Bridge.
A social media appeal was launched and it didn’t take long for Andy and Jackie Dale to be contacted.
Having already seen Scooby run across the main road once, Police took the decision to cart Scooby off to Ryde Police Station – but there was no handcuffs in sight, just lots of love and attention.
The Dales soon picked up a shaken Scooby from Ryde and took him home, where he quickly fell asleep on the sofa with his sister, Ruby.
Jackie has said:
“A huge thank you to all who messaged me which meant I got my boy back safely from a Policeman who adored him! Thank you to PC Steve and to Donna at The Sloop.
“Those cyclists should be ashamed of themselves for their stupid actions”.

Will only get ever worse as yobs can better afford electric cycles which they tweak to be able to attain fast speeds and will become more and more of an accident waiting to happen on our bridle ways and paths, the only escape for many children, elderly dog walkers and nature lovers.
With thousands more homes to fill the Isle and countless thousands of that ilk filling them, IMAGINE what it will be like within a decade.
The ruination of this Island.
Ensure YOU remember this when voting in May.
Joe, we too whilst walking our two dogs have noticed a marked increase in the more aggressive cyclists on many footpaths now.
I had attributed this to bored youth gaining exercise during the lockdown period.
However I fear that you are likely correct in your assumption that as powered transport increases due to lower prices and availability of such the ‘lazy’ and ‘type’ which has little or no interest in nature, beauty or indeed other users safety, will increase dramatically. Especially so as thousands more will fill the new buildings planned for this small Island.
As many of these people care little about the countryside, but only enter such to gain the buzz of speeding through it, and destroying the peace, relaxation and tranquil haven which the more chilled cyclists, dog walkers and nature lovers once found their happiness.
I suggest we all adhere to your advice and choose our elected members with far more thought this time around.
The ill effects of over construction will NOT ‘just’ be felt where the homes are placed.
We will all suffer from the consequences of such, in many many ways.
We don’t really know the full story here- some dog owners also need to take more responsibility for keeping their dogs under control. So many time while out cycling (respectfully, slowly and carefully), people let their dogs run around cyclists. I’ve been knocked off and badly hurt more than once just out of plain ignorance because people think it’s fun to let their dogs run around.
The dog made it home safely that’s all that matters
