Representatives from across Sandown Bay are working together to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I with a series of events and inclusive projects.
As part of the commemorations, a special church service is being held to remember Chief Petty Officer A Shimmield of HM Coastguard who died 100 years ago today (23rd October 1918). The service is to be held on Sunday 4th November 2018, from 10:30 at St Paul’s Church in Shanklin.
St Paul’s Shanklin shares a Minister (Rev Mark Williams) with Christ Church in Sandown. It’s where Chief Petty Officer Shimmield is buried alongside 18 other Commonwealth War Graves from both World Wars.
Rev Mark Williams said:
“Members of the local community recognise that Public Services will be held across the Island, and the Country, on 11th November 2018, but it was important to arrange a special Church service in recognition of the significance of the commemoration”.
Representatives from Sandown, Lake and Shanklin Town and Parish Councils are involved, as well as the wider community, and a special exhibition of commemorative work, produced by students at local schools, is part of the commemoration.
Rev Williams concluded:
“Christ Church, like other locations on the Island, contains graves of service personnel that served in the First World War, and the planned service will recognise the sacrifices made by Islanders 100 years ago”.
Christ Church, Sandown, is hosting a commemorative exhibition on Saturday 3rd November 2018 from 10:00.
