Discount retailer Poundland is to move its Ryde premises up the High Street to the vacant M&Co later this year.
The new premises – located less than 100m from the current Poundland – has been empty since M&Co closed in April.
The future of all M&Co stores on the Island was plunged into darkness just before Christmas when it was announced that the company was entering administration. The Ryde branch closed back in April.
Back in January, a planning application was filed by Round Island Ltd. proposing to build 5x 3-bed, 3-storey houses in the car park off John Street, as well as developing 4x 1-bed flats on the top floor of the High Street premises previously occupied by M&Co. But now Poundland have swooped in and are set to take over the building.
Island Echo is unaware as to whether the aforementioned planning application is proceeding.
This move is perhaps surprising for some given the large financial spend undertaken by Poundland when they moved into the current premises in 2015, as exclusively reported by Island Echo.

Plans to move the shop are part of national plans to relocate as many as 50 Poundland stores up and down the country. It is unclear as to what will happen to the current Poundland store with it likely to remain empty for some time.
The new Poundland store is set to open up on Saturday 23rd September 2023.

Can’t wait for the full range of Poundland clothing and freezer food.
Or maybe I can!
Our once glorious High Street now resembles a third world hovel. All the lovely shops gone forever, and the local families who used to frequent Barnnets, Mac Fisheries, Woolworth etc, likely as local as a Zebra too.
Newcomers know no better but us locals know how the Island, and England used to be, and how awful it has become since Labour opened the flood gates, and not on the Thames either.
Does not surprise me.
Poundland over the last few years have increased prices on many items by 50%+ if not more
Today I noticed 20 food bags are now a £1, a few months ago a box of 60 bags
were £1 (200% increase)
Poundland are coining it in, hence being able to afford a much larger premises.
Inflation is under 10%, so why are Poundland being so greedy.
Don’t know why it is still called poundland when most things are double that or more.
