I’m surprised there aren’t more collisions at this junction, when exiting Culver Down, you can’t see traffic coming from the Bembridge direction until they’re right on the junction. It is a nasty blind spot. People often say how dangerous road layouts are, but I think this is one that really needs looking at. When ever I cycle or drive past this junction I am always ready to give way to vehicles coming down from Culver as know they can’t see and many people will take chances! Good to hear the cyclist wasn’t seriously injured in this case though.
I think your find that in the highway code drive at a speed so you can stop in the distance you can see,so slow down around blind bends.
I could not agree more
Completely agree, those of us who know, slow right down when coming from the Bembridge direction. Visitors are unaware and despite the SLOW signs just carry on as usual, and its not always visitors. It’s a really dangerous junction. I would go so far as to say it needs traffic lights.
Yea .,glad the cyclist wasn’t badly hurt, must have shaken the rider up. That junction is awful. When I’m approaching i slow right down. I often wonder ,what if somebody’s brakes fail on that hill, doesn’t bare thinking about.
Would one of those mirrors sited opposite Culver Road help to see what’s approaching,? Just a thought. probably wouldn’t help if somebody’s speeding
Maybe people just need to drive. The driving standard on the island has to be worst I’ve ever come across in 35 years of driving
The driving standard on the island, by islanders, is in my opinion very good. It takes a definite downturn during the months during the holiday season, when visitors with no knowledge of the roads, career about as though they are on mainland roads, often driving over the white line. Lord help anyone meeting a holidaymaker in Beacon Alley!
You’re right, there is a speed limit for motorists, but cyclists do not adhere to it. I know from experience!
Often when I’m driving from Culver, I’ll get to the junction, turn the radio and heater off, open the window and listen for traffic. Three times last year just as i drove forward, a cyclist would fly past silently at such speed, there would be no way of them stopping. Each time It frightened the life out of me. Cyclists need to take responsibility too.
It’s a scary junction!!!!!
