Alverstone residents have denounced plans for yellow lines and parking restrictions through the picturesque village. Describing the Isle of Wight Council regulation as a ‘waste of resources’ and ‘unnecessary work’, residents have been shocked to find rows of traffic cones laid through Alversone Road this week. The council’s cabinet gave the go ahead for the District 4 Traffic Regulation Order on 9th May, with restrictions in Alverstone, Arreton, Newchurch, Lake, Sandown and Shanklin. Karen Dyke, representing Alverstone’s protest group, said:
“A flurry of emails went out to Island Roads and IWCC to find that yellow lines and parking restrictions were imminent. “The only local notice that this was being considered was an A4 piece of paper placed on a post in flooded December, with a December cut off for objections, unsurprisingly very few people noticed it – although the parish and ward councillor said it was a waste of resources and a safety issue. “The majority of residents have enough drive and garage space so do not park on the road, but Alverstone is popular with families, walkers, and nature lovers, being next to the red squirrel trail and Alverstone Mead squirrel hide. “They will now have to park further away and walk along the road with vehicles speeding by, as without cars acting as traffic calming there will be no reason for them to slow down. “There will also be the danger of people being forced to park in the narrow lanes and passing places on the approaches to the village.”
Another resident, who chose to remain anonymous, said the yellow lines would ‘ruin’ the village’s rural character. They said:
“It is apparently for safety reasons (as assessed by road safety engineers), despite the fact that having lived in the village for over 12 years there have been no accidents associated with parking (to my knowledge). “The councillor, the parish council and residents have objected to this unnecessary work to no avail.”
A council spokesperson has said:
“We can confirm that the intention is to implement the Traffic Regulation Order for the parking restrictions on Alverstone Road. “This has gone through the full and correct process for this Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) including an informal and formal consultation process. “During May’s meeting cabinet members used this information to come to a decision based on the reasons provided for implementation, which was largely based on safety concerns. “The impact of the new regulations will be subject to a periodic review and future changes are possible, if necessary, which would follow full due process.”

Please don’t forget !! Old farts off the roafs
Please do t forget your really sounding like a one trick pony!.
Stop exposing yourself it’s embarrassing
Coming from rolf Harris
So, apparently there’s a parking problem in Alverstone requiring double yellow lines?
There’s so many things that the Council could be doing to make life better for people across the Island, and yet all they can seem to come up with is things like this, double yellow lines in Alverstone.
They have a job lot of yellow paint that they got from Del boy and Rodney that they need to use up.
Money, money, money. Our money. Paying Island Roads for unecessary work….
What a waste off money..all the pot holes a cross island and island council wasting money on a road that sees about 20 cars a day most of the year..locals dont want it..no accidents there what idiot makes these decisions. Is tersa may got a job there.
Forget alverstone, get down to Northwood and double yellow pallance rd, the morons down past the pub cause havoc parking both sides of the rd!
Must be scummy builders, they are a law unto themselves.
We had a similar problem along Arthur’s Hill in Shanklin.
Clamp them and tow them away.
But they were sat in there vans playing with there peckers
Not all people have drives down there for their vehicles… but agree at least one side should be. I’d say it’s more of the speed of the vehicles passing through is the issue, regularly see 50mph+ down that road which is insane.
Double Yellow Line the whole island, that will
Stop the B’stards.
There is No Law and Order, IW Council are more concerned
booking tourists who go a few minutes over their time in
car parks or High Streets.
Send a few Civil Enforcement Officers along to Pallance Rd
and once they start issuing fines, that will solve the problem.
> They will now have to park further away and walk along the road with vehicles speeding by
Or – hear me out – walkers and cyclists that love Red Squirrel Trail could…. walk and cycle the Red Squirrel Trail instead of driving a car? Just an idea.
Or we could even invest in safe pavements and further traffic calming if vehicles are speeding! I mean, you do seem to like traffic calming:
> as without cars acting as traffic calming there will be no reason for them to slow down
If you’re worried about traffic calming you can put there permanent planters? Unlike cars, it will be permanent safety then? 😉
As a walker, hiker, runner, cyclist and a horse rider, for me less cars = always better.
There are too many vehicles on island Roads and Streets, many families
are clogging up Roads and Streets.
If the Council implemented islandwide parking permits
just see how many families would declutter the number of
vehicles they own.
Make people pay per vehicle, it would help the climate by
getting rid of many vehicles
Visitors come from all over the island so cant walk, there has never been an accident ( which on the island is rare) so if it ain’t broke don’t fix it with our money,
There are too many thick uneducated families on the
Island who think they can park where they want.
More and more Double Yellow Lines need installing across the
Island.
It’s about time IW Council employed their own fleet of
Tow Trucks.
Any vehicle other than Emergency Services parking on
Double Yellow Lines need towing away and crushing.
THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR LAZY B’STARDS
Look at the selfish B’stards who didn’t move their vehicles in
Ventnor on Carnival night.
IW Council are a soft touch
Subject to periodic review and changes are possible, so we spend lots of money putting in traffic restrictions only to find in time they were not necessary or need altering and we pay more money to change or remove them, yep, cracking use of limited resources.
So… never change anything ever? Or what’s your plan? Never validate the effectiveness of solutions and live in the guess-land?
“Never validate the effectiveness of solutions.and live in the guess land”, you need to stop using the magic mushrooms and speak and think in english. There are no traffic issues in this area as I pass it every day, the ocasional drive but you get that everywhere.
Due process as in waste money doing a “consultation” exercise with no intention of taking any notice of the results then have a meeting to rubber stamp the decision they have already made.
They are merely paying the bare minimum lip service to their legal obligations.
Whilst that may comply with the letter of due process it most definitely does not comply with the spirit and will not be sufficient to protect them from the legal consequences and compensation pay-out if (when?) someone inevitably gets injured.
A challenge on the grounds of inappropriate use of public funds might be possible but would probably only delay the inevitable and waste even more money.
Let’s get some permit bays there too. Why should people park on public roads to go into private houses. More of this needed on the iow
needs it as island drivers can’t get round all the parked cars sorry car
Lets be honest, no point unless the traffic wardens venture away from the main carparks in the larger towns, if the council needs to do something, a roadwide speedbump would be better, slow down cars, bikers and cyclists.
Labour are, as stated on here going to build double the amount of homes on the Island than previously sanctioned.
This is, in part, due to the truly ‘endless’ flow of people into mainland UK. For then, these people often create a situation where the locals in such areas, up sticks and move to places like the Island, to be among those they feel more at home with.
So whilst Alverstone May be safe from the development, as yet, surrounding areas could well be vulnerable to green/grey belt development, thus yellow lines are necessary if Alverstone then becomes a future rat-run
People once never considered Alverstone Garden Village would ever be built. Labour the wrong choice, Reform would have limited the need so many houses.
Oh dear. Same old broken record. Deform lost the election. If only you understood.
PEOPLE DIDN’T VOTE FOR DEFORM BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T BELIEVE THEY WOULD BE ANY GOOD.
Most of us still don’t believe they would be any good!
Should have voted Tory
Lol
Pity they don’t spend the money repairing alpine and zig zag roads in Ventnor before a cyclist gets killed.
Do these road safety engineers ever have a look at the Middle Road, the Military Road and the Downs Road?
Newchurch at the Squirrel trail is a much higher safety risk due to unnecessary parking and higher volumes of traffic. Never viewed Alverstone as a problem.
Regent Street Shanklin need Double Yellow Lines down
1 side to STOP the idiots who own the takeaways parking on
the pavement
