Following a major £1.8 million investment, The Gouldings is reopening soon with a fresh new look and a host of job opportunities for people interested in rewarding careers in the health and care sector.
The Gouldings, a reablement centre in the West Wight, has been part of the Freshwater community for almost 50 years, providing essential support for people coming out of the hospital or facing a crisis in the community.
The vital Isle of Wight Council facility creates a positive, welcoming space for people to recover and regain independence, no matter what challenges they face.
The site has undergone a full transformation, bringing the building up to date, enabling space for specialist equipment, and meeting the requirements of the Care Quality Commission so the centre can continue to support local people well into the future.
Works began in May 2023 when the building closed temporarily.
Existing staff were redeployed into new roles and positions around the Island and while many are returning, some chose to continue in their new roles, creating new opportunities to join this inspirational workforce and ensure the facility is fully staffed in time for reopening.
Every day is different in reablement, caring for people with a huge variety of support needs.
The onsite team never know who will come through the doors next and swiftly become experts in adapting their work to suit the needs of every Islander who needs the service, and they love what they do.
The friendly, supportive team, work hard to help people live as independently as possible in the place they call home. This includes support with maintaining coordination, mobility and confidence always working with clients, not for them.
Whether as a support worker, a domestic assistant or for those pursuing a role in management, this team offers great opportunities for local people to access a new career in care with great development opportunities and a really exciting work environment.
Martin Garbett, service manager for The Gouldings, said:
“We have a comprehensive training programme and induction plan.
“Team members have monthly formal and informal supervision and guidance from a line manager and the opportunity to progress their career through apprenticeships (study while you earn) from Level 1 to Level 5 including the degree in social work.
“The Gouldings can be the start of a varied and rewarding career, while making a difference to the local community.”
When The Gouldings reopens it will have 23 ensuite rooms, including some that are able to provide more specialist support, together with communal kitchen facilities to improve independent living practice and dedicated therapy spaces.
