UPDATED: PUPIL CLIMBS ONTO THE ROOF OF ISLAND LEARNING CENTRE IN NEWPORT

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Police have been called to a school in Newport this afternoon (Wednesday) as a result of a pupil climbing onto the roof.

Emergency services have cordoned off an area surrounding the Island Learning Centre on Albany Road whilst they deal with the incident.

Officers are trying to speak with the male and negotiate a safe ending to the situation, which began sometime before 16:05. A firefighter has used a short extension ladder to climb up onto the roof and engage with the teen.

It remains unclear why the pupil has taken such action.

The Island Learning Centre provides specialised alternative provision for the most vulnerable students on the Isle of Wight. The school relocated to Albany Road after the previous establishment in Lake was burnt to the ground.

UPDATE @ 17:20  – The child is now safely on the ground thanks to the efforts of firefighters, Police and teaching staff.

An investigation is likely to take place into how and why the incident occurred.

There was a pupil leaping about on the roof the other morning . He seemed to be enjoying himself….probably part of the gang that smoke weed in a nearby lane !!
