Poundland has confirmed the date on which its Cowes branch will permanently close, marking the end of the retailer’s presence in the town.
The official closure date has now been set following an announcement last month that the discount retailer would be shutting the store as part of a wider review of its portfolio.
The Cowes store will close on Wednesday 30th July.
The discount retailer – located at 6 High Street – only opened in 2021. The site previously housed M&CO.
Stores in Newport, Ryde and Shanklin will remain open as normal.
A Poundland spokesperson has said:
“We’d obviously like to thank customers for their support over the last few years and look forward to welcoming them to other locations on the Island.
“It goes without saying whenever we close a store in circumstances like these, we do all we can to look for other opportunities for colleagues, and that work is underway.
“With over 800 locations across the UK and Ireland, we constantly review our store portfolio as leases expire or come up for renewal.”
The closure comes amid broader uncertainty for the chain, with the future of 100 stores reportedly under review following the company’s sale.
Poundland first arrived on the Isle of Wight some 12 years ago when the Newport store was opened by Corrie actor, Anthony Cotton. This was followed by a second store in Shanklin and in 2015 customers were welcomed in Ryde.
Such a shame, the last budget didn’t help businesses
at all.
I can see it being empty for quite sometime.
