Plans have been put forward to turn the dormant Natwest building on Riverway Industrial Estate in Newport into a GP practice.
It would see the top floor of the building turned into a GP practice helping to meet the demands of the local healthcare service.
Assura – the company behind the plans – build, invest and manage General Practitioner and primary care buildings across the UK.
The changes are only internal, and will not affect the outside of the building, car park or greenery behind the premises.
The proposed site is on the outskirts instead of not directly in the centre of Newport – unlike surgeries on West Street and Pyle Street – therefore meaning that ideally, a car would be needed to access it.
If approved the new surgery would help alleviate some of the pressure that the Island’s healthcare provisions have recently been under.

Excellent. Another new building they can’t staff because we don’t have enough doctors and nurses.
How are they going to attract doctors to their practice?
How do you attract anyone where there is a shortage of labour? You offer to pay more than the competition.
How can Assura offer doctors more pay when NHS rates are fixed?
Doesn’t need a genius to work that one out.
With that said, a doctor contracted through Assura will still chose other location over the Isle of Wight. Problem still not solved.
I wonder if this is a medical practice that will use physician associates as reported in a recent panorama report on the national news?
So how are the old people going to walk there ?
And how are the young people going to get there , stoned out of their tinies? A lot of us ‘old people’ are more resilient than you think. But, as said, how are they going to find the staff and will they answer the telephone?
And what number bus goes there??
Do you think that bus routes can be changed?
39
No 38 goes round the houses including industrial estate.
the no 39 goes there
Why can’t they just do a walk-in centre and then the whole Island can benefit.
They had a walk in centre at the hospital but not sure why it got scrapped probably due to staff shortages or lack of funds to sustain it
no, the walk in centre was scrapped because it became over run with every whiny dosser going, that broke a nail.
the beacon centre, was short staffed one day and they made an announcement that it would be four hours to see anyone – nearly everyone got up and walked out – timewasters the lot of them – needless to say, the centre changed its walk in status after that
I smell BS. Aint ever going to happen.
There are no suitable buildings in the centre of town, therefore you have to look for a building outside of the shopping area. This is likely to be a suggestion for a multipurpose building, where clinics can be held not necessarily by a GP. Maybe a phlebotomist or a Physiotherapist, or one of the loads of other specialities that are needed in healthcare.
they could always use county hall only been used for hot air at the moment
Great! Now all we need is the GPs to man it.
No houses for them, the NIMBY lot keep blocking all attempts at creating more housing.
It all sounds very good but not of any use if you can’t get the staff and as for location, middle of no-where!
Being upstairs hopefully they will install either lifts or elevator for moving stairs for those people who cannot get up stairs.
A brand new external glass lift is being installed as we speak.
Just need some doctors back at work now or it will be an empty building and please have more than one person to answer the phone
Steps up to it and using the upstairs, is it wheelchair friendly?
Yes, they have recently fitted a disabled friendly lift to the left of the stairs.
Long overdue (If it happens !! ). Remember Newport had THREE when there were far less people.
‘West Street’ ? now Wootton
Beyond tired of this!
Great choice if entry into building is up all those stairs, what happend to the disability access laws? I know there is a limited bus service to the estate but I hope this will increase for those not able or financially able to drive to venue.
Have you heard of disability lifts? I heard elsewhere on this thread that one was going to be installed.
For those interested found this on web:

Can they staff it with Doctors, and if they can will they actually see anybody?
The Co-op building in the town centre should coldnvert easily to a health centre. It comes complete with a car park and is handy for bus travellers. Now that doctors don’t see patients very often they don’ t need an examination couch each so they could manage in a smaller building. But, of course, that would mean taking care of people, not numbers.
The cost is too high….
Whats point…gps still wont see patients f2f! Another hot air post
Will never happen, the NIMBY lot will put a stop to it.
We need NHS dentists more than doctors.
No doctors will be present, you will enter a cubicle and stand before an electronic diagnostic screen, the central computer will determine your treatment from there on, zero human interaction.
What a wonderful fantasy world you do live in.
Good use of building, but no bus route & a fair distance from town centre, hopefully other space could be used for Physio, OT, community healthcare
got to agree with Grunoy , just look at how Wootton is growing in size with houses being built all over the place How about a dental surgery
AND PARKING is there any for staff and patients?
