Households across the Isle of Wight could be asked to pay an additional £10 a year to fund Policing locally, meaning even higher council tax bills next year.
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones is urging residents to share their views in the annual police budget precept consultation.
The Government is giving Police and Crime Commissioners the flexibility to increase the policing precept of the council tax in 2022 by £10 per year (based on a Band D property), to fund the increasing demands on policing. For Band D properties this would be an increase of 83p per month and for Band B properties, this would be an increase of 65p per month or £7.77 per year (an increase of 4.4%).
With over 60% of council taxpayers in the Hampshire Constabulary policing area living in properties that are Band A-C the majority of people would see an increase of less than £10 a year.
The Commissioner is asking local residents to complete an online survey at https://survey.alchemer.eu/s3/90403404/Police-Budget-2022-23.
“As your Police and Crime Commissioner I am committed to ensuring that your police precept is spent wisely and delivers best value for money. I am committed to reducing wasteful spending across policing, to ensure we employ the maximum number of police officers possible.
“Your support of an increase in the policing precept for the year ahead, will be spent on increasing police numbers in order to detect more crime and improving our police service. In my Police and Crime Plan ‘More Police, Safer Streets’ I have committed to the recruitment of 600 additional police to compliment the Government’s national uplift programme.
“Through the increased visibility of neighbourhood police officers, I want communities to be safer and feel safer too. With more police officers and better budgeting you will see greater focus on tackling the crimes that matter to you like: anti-social behaviour; scams and fraud, as well as greater targeting of rural crime and tackling serious violence and knife crime.
“Long call wait times, repetitive messages, no feedback, and a perceived lack of action are some of the comments I have received about the 101 service. With an increase in police funds from the police precept, I will make it easier for you to report crime and receive feedback via the Hampshire Constabulary website.
“Preventing crime from happening in the first place and diverting young people away from the criminal justice system needs investment. I will be increasing my commissioning budget by £1million to fund specialist services to stop the cycle of criminality. This will be achieved through early intervention programmes with young people and those vulnerable to becoming victims.
“Your support of policing services and the completion of this budget-focused survey, is greatly appreciated.”
A simple question is why, really why, not just some load of lies, I bet our increase will fund Hampshire and never will there be more police of the Island again. As for support, we have no choice in paying an overbloated council tax precept for overbloated lies.
Didn’t we all know that Bojos increase in police would end up coming out of our pockets
What do we get for this extra £10?
a Police officer on the beat?
a Police station that’s actually open?
Police to actually turn up when needed?
as with everything we pay whether it income tax, council tax.we get less and less for our money. LEGALISED ROBBERY!!
If memory serves, we never receive a rebate in taxes when services are reduced, but have to pay extra when (some) services are restored?
Actually, since they carry weapons and lock you up or takes your goods if you don’t comply the correct term would be “demanding money with menaces”
Unfortunately we don’t have any right of appeal over these inflation busting increases (unless you count trying to remove an MP from a safe seat once every five years…)
PCW i agree with you entirely .since Maggie Thatcher was in power every year Council tax increases by more the rate of inflation which means out serveces should be better ,.BUT THE SERVICES ARE WORSE every year we get cuts, everyone is getting lazy , even the refuge collectors wont come round the back garden to collect the bins they want bins to be at kerbside ,maybe they will next ask the ratepayers to place the bins on their wagons next, they all want wet nursing.
First thing to do is to get rid of the PCC, then talk about money.
well spoken Tony, they never do anything anyway ,nothing gets done you report a crime then they give you handouts ,we was last conned out of £6000 nothing done, .just was told by the PCC to be carefull ?
It’s all a vicious circle. Road traffic accidents must a growing drain on police resources, and not enough money is spent to deter them.
Police and council don’t invest enough in prevention and wonder why there are increased claims on police time.
they will now invest in roads on the prison site because it will be there intention to put houses on this site thats why they alterd St Mary s roundabout,St Goeges way ,and now the Traffic lights in Newport ????
The poor taxpayer…!!! Robbing people used to come in the form of a person with a bag, balaclava and a weapon of choice?! We have had enough of being robbed. Perhaps lowering the salaries of the people at the top?!
If the policing wasn’t cut in the first place we wouldn’t be paying for it now . putting on more already stretch people with price increases
Why should we have to pay more for a service we do not get, no routine road policing, very few foot patrols,no police interest in low level crime, no police interest in antisocial behaviour, in short we have no effective policing here on the island.
I’ve just had a look at the survey
The first question do you agree or disagree with the new funding
Policy if you tick disagree you can’t just submit that you have to answer all the other questions on how you would like the money spent.
Yes, it does assume that the extra funding is something which will happen no matter what we say. I’d be 100% behind extra funding if policemen and women were actually visible on our streets.
And, asking us in the survey which crimes we would like investigated? Why are the police not investigating ALL crimes?
It’s honestly a very poor survey and it does give the impression of just ‘going through the motions.’
The council tax will go up yet again along with all these other charges – am I on my own here
but my income hasnt gone up by the same amount. Totally fed up with this going up year on year struggling to pay it and see the money wasted. If you cant pay they will destroy you
What a joke, seriously wouldn’t miss them if they didn’t get the rise. Should spend less time in the speed camera van and be out there solving real crimes
Speeding is a real crime, doh!
Your support for extra police funding, Oh realy. Support usually means you are in favour of something, nobody asked me. The police funding part of our council tax has equated to quite a large precept in recent years. What Tangible value have we had from that? I do support the police, but in the thirty years i have lived in my area i have never seen a copper on the beat. Probably all the funds spent in Hampshire.
We never see any police in Bembridge, IoW.
This council keeps saying our Council tax is a property Tax and does not reflect on any Servioces ? ,who the hell is this Council kidding .
i dont mind paying extra if the police carries out their dutys ,and not fob people off that we need a lot more evidance .Police dont want to know if you report a crime .they are good at sitting in there speed camera vehicals on the island ,maybe xmas is comming and need extra money
I hope that all the people complaining on here, with very good reason, will actually complete the survey stating that they oppose the increases. There is no use moaning otherwise. We need these totally useless “commissioners” to know that the public do not support them and want to see a return on their money. Just complaining on a newspaper comments page will not achieve anything. I am now going to complete the survey and leave her in no doubt that I do not support the increase…
‘to fund the increasing demands on policing’ It would be encouraging if we actually got to see some policemen and policewomen on the street, walking around. Yes, they’ll turn up in a car if someone dials 999 but I’m sure a lot of petty crimes wouldn’t be happening if the police were a visible presence on the streets.
From the questionnaire – ‘which types of crime would you like to see tackled?’ Really, what sort of question is that? Surely ALL crimes should be investigated?
