A man has been detained on suspicion of assault, burglary and criminal damage following a town centre incident in Ryde this afternoon (Thursday).
Police were called at 14:45 with reports of an ongoing incident in Green Street, in the vicinity of Fellowship House.
It is said that officers were responding to a male behaving ‘erratically’, who had assaulted people in the street and at an address. It is also said he had damaged a window.
The 41-year-old suspect was quickly located and taken to the ground by responding officers, who detained the male on the pavement as they wrestled to bring him under control.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has 2 ambulances and an operational commander on scene treating those involved. The injuries sustained are not thought to be life-threatening.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that the 41-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion off assault occasioning actual bodily harm, burglary with intent to cause damage, and criminal damage. He has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station.
Green Street was closed for a time but has since reopened.
Police remain at the scene making further enquiries.

Bloody low life again
Sadly Ryde is full of numpties.
A late dear friend of the family who sadly passed over
30 years ago who was born and bred in Ryde.
Len said, Ryde is a Sh*thole and he ain’t wrong
it’s not improved over the years, it’s getting worse.
Ain’t is that iow terminology
Well, well, well, Green St again, what a surprise!
Yeah..a stone’s throw from the cop shop.
You can tell it’s only a stones throw away by all the broken windows.
The people who live in Green st and close by locations have to put up with allsorts of undesirable behaviour from the residents of Fellowship House, they drink in the gateway of the car park and intimidate the people who use it, and they congregate at the bottom of Green St and High St on those two benches and drink and shout with constant antisocial behaviour. That place should be moved or closed down.
Watch your mouth pal. Not every resident in that building is a scumbag. I’ve just moved out after 7 years. If it closes down, where are those who are homeless and have no other options supposed to live? You’re a selfish wanker. Try living in there and see if you can last two weeks, let alone 7 years.
This place seems to be full of nice, friendly people who know how to behave themselves. I cannot understand why anyone would want to bad mouth them ??????
Aykut your reply tells me your a scrounger like the rest of them
and have no intentions improving your situation but happy to accept hand outs and then moan about what you get free from the tax payers
They need banging up.
More like hanging up, by the neck.
A single copper with a proper double leg takedown could have stopped him, if we’re speaking on wrestling terms.
Complete waste of taxpayer’s money
Why use 1 IoW copper when 3 will do?
That’s at the same traffic lights at High Street / Upper High Street / St. John’s Road and Green Street, where there was an assault the other day.
I’m starting to wonder whether the ‘Care in the Community’ actually works, or whether those who are unstable ought to be locked inside a unit to protect themselves and members of the public.
More scum in the island..
What do you expect load a block up with shit don’t flush the loo it will end up on the pavement
‘Assault occasioning actual bodily harm.’ Yet they have a female police officer joining in the melee to arrest him.
Time the police stopped this politically correct nonsense.
Suspicion OFF assault!? English grammar isn’t a strong point on Island Echo is it?
They deserve free onions for life!
