Police are investigating the behaviour of 3 men after they attempted to snatch a dog from a 9-year-old girl on Sandown High Street on Saturday.
The incident occurred between 13:20 and 13:40 outside Sainsbury’s on High Street.
A man approached the child who was standing outside with her dog and tried to take the lead from her hand.
Fortunately, the child’s mother was able to intervene before the men were able to make off with the dog with the man leaving the area with 2 other men shortly after.
Enquiries into that incident remain ongoing.
Police have also been made aware of concerns regarding the behaviour of a group of men – thought to be the same as those who attempted to steal the dog – at Sandown Pier that same afternoon and are appealing for anyone with information to contact police on 101, or via the online reporting tool.
UPDATE TUESDAY – A 43-year-old man and 45-year-old man, both from Newport, have been arrested on suspicion of common assault in relation to the incident outside Sainsbury’s.
The 43-year-old has been released with no further action, however, the 45-year-old has been bailed until 6th May while enquiries continue.

Last week you published a full facial photograph of a suspected shoplifter which was brilliant and I am sure that she was traced and at least spoken too so very well done for doing that. So why now are these miscreants not having their faces shown? I’m sure that someone would recognise them. This is what happens when you let anybody into our country nowadays! Now innocent children being assaulted.
Any mention of type of breed,it’s a constant worry when you’re out and about with Our fur babies eyes and ears are kept open throughout their daily walk.Change our routine fairly regularly so that must help.
I agree that the breed should be named in case they are stealing to order. As dog owners we should all be extra vigilant.
Can’t we actually see their faces please so we might have half a chance of recognising them.
