A dog that attacked a Chihuahua and later went on to kill a Dachshund is thought to be the same breed of dog that killed a woman in Surrey last week.
Police have confirmed that they are investigating 2 dog-on-dog attacks which occurred in the Freshwater area on Wednesday, as previously reported by Island Echo.
It’s been reported that between 09:00-09:30 on 11th January, an ‘enormous’ dog – described as being a Leonberger – attacked a Chihuahua, which sustained an injury as a result. The incident took place on a footpath near Golden Hill.
Then, later in the day, the same dog attacked and killed a miniature wire-haired dachshund, also at Golden Hill. The much smaller animal was being walked by a dog walker when the fatal attack took place. It’s said that the elderly female owner of the offending animal then arrived with a 2nd large dog, but was ‘discompassionate’ at the situation.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that local officers are aware and are making further enquiries into the circumstances, working in accordance with the legislation laid down in law.
It was on Thursday afternoon that a 28-year-old woman was tragically killed when she was attacked by a Leonberger and at least 3 other animals whilst walking through a forest at Gravelly Hill in Caterham, Surrey.
In what has been described as a ‘frenzied attack’, the Leonberger mauled the London-based dog walker to death shortly after attacking another woman, who was injured but survived.
Back on the Island, residents have expressed concern that the public may be at risk from the West Wight-based animal following last week’s double dog attack, with the incident in Surrey proving that attacks on humans can occur and can be fatal.
I’m so glad the Police are investigating and making enquiries. Irresponsible, arrogant dog owners cannot be allowed to have these dogs, off lead and not muzzled. That poor little Dachshund and the poor owners, they must be distraught. So very sorry for you but at the same time, so very angry. I hope both the dog and the owner are found quickly!

Why on earth would you have a dog that you cannot control, if you have any animal you need to be responsible, the dog is not at fault it is the owner ….

The dog owners and walkers in Freshwater and Totland area all know each other. They WILL know who this person is who owns this dog. Hopefully they will inform the Police and do the right thing before another treasured pet is killed.

This animal needs to be traced and destroyed. It has not been kept under proper control and is a danger to the public and their pets. Once a dog has attacked someone or another dog, it cannot be trusted not to attack again. It has now become as lethal as a maniac with a gun.
punish the owner not the dog, unfortunately and I’m going to get lots of hate for this but women and giant dogs seem to be on the increase, they just get dragged about and cannot control dogs over a certain size and when things get spicy they let go of the lead, you all know what I’m talking about here as we’ve seen this lot looking at their phones and their dogs charging around the island barking at everything off the lead..last few attacks have been female owners…
Sound’s like the elderly owner of this out of control killer dog needs to be put in a cage with it.
She needs to be prosecuted, imagine if these were small children.

Unfortunately pets are classed as possessions, as with recent dog attack on the mainland, I doubt if anything will be done apart from the offending dog having to be muzzled when out.
Someone in Freshwater must know who this woman is and should report her to the police, this animal will continue to attack other dogs and unless something is done inevitably it will attack a person or child, hopefully if it does attack someone it should be its owner but sadly it will probably be an innocent person minding their own business.
It sounds like the owner isn’t able to control her dogs. I have no doubt that she loves them but they need to be removed from her care. Sadly the dog or dogs are probably too dangerous to be rehomed so will probably need to be put to sleep. She should be prosecuted and not allowed to keep dogs again. Please, please, if you have any dog, regardless of size or breed, if you are out in public keep them on a lead and importantly in full control.

Dog attacks on livestock, dog on dog and pretty much anything that moves as well as human beings, the constant fouling etc etc.

If you want to be liked, clean up your act, you all know one another and each others dogs, rat out those that harm your image, rather than sheepishly cover up, turn a blind eye or act all indignant when your behaviour is brought into question.

I am a dog owner in freshwater and I totally agree with you….I would love the government to bring out a law stating any dog in a public area MUST BE on a short lead. Our dog is never off lead, he can be reactive if a dog comes near as he was attacked by an off the lead boxer! I am sick of asking other dog owners who allow their pets to run free to get hold of the dog whilst I walk past, most times getting an answer of “ why should I my dogs fine”….there are too many irresponsible dog owners everywhere who think they are above any kind of thought to others, they are very selfish and ignorant! And yes there is way too much dog mess around so please a message to dog owners – be responsible pick it up and dispose of it, there is no excuse!
Agree with you , it used to be nice to go for a walk down the beach, now you can’t get any peace , as some lolloping great mutt runs at you teeth bared, or jumps up with muddy paws, the usual line is of course he’s only playing, well I do t want to!

Oh wow why do you think a dog needs to be off lead for exercise? Walking on lead is EXERCISE it doesn’t need to run around causing unnecessary carnage in its wake for it to have exercise!! It’s the big dogs that need to be on leads over small breeds – but ALL dogs should be on a lead in public to try and prevent the attacks on humans as well as any other animal….my dog is never off lead and gets 1:5 – 2hr walks every day, what is that if not proper exercise I wonder perhaps

A friendly well trained dog has a much better walking experience off lead. A dog behaviourist could explain the benefits to you. Big dogs need to be on leads?! They need more exercise! My golden retriever had excellent recall and got on with everyone. Aggressive dogs should always be muzzled off lead. I’m not sure of the reason behind your dog being on a lead all of the time, but your message screams inexperienced dog owner, unless of course your dog is aggressive.

Probably nothing will come of this sadly. My 5 yo niece was attacked by a large dog, it was unprovoked, she was walking home with her mother when the off leash dog ran up behind her and bit a large chunk in the top of her leg which required hospital attention. This was reported but that same dog is still walked around the same area where there are other children and dogs. So she has been left in fear every time she sees a large dog but seemingly nothing has happened to prevent further attacks.

I’m pleased that the police are investigating this. I do wonder if they only investigate if the worst scenario happens – why wait until it’s too late? I say this because my puppy was attacked by a large French bull dog recently . The couple had no recall or control over this dog. They wouldn’t answer me when I shouted out three times, “is it friendly?!” It started lunging at us, so I lifted my dog in the air and it leapt up to my waist height and bit my dog hard on the leg twice. I was kicking their dog in attempt to protect mine, but it would not stop. The police did not want to know, even though the dog was out of control and IOW Council said that someone would phone me back, but didn’t.
