Dog owners in the West Wight have been alerted to a vicious attack which led to a dog being killed by another, much larger dog earlier this week.
The tragic incident happened near the car park at Golden Hill Country Park, Freshwater on Wednesday.
Taking to social media, a witness has described the moment the ‘enormous’ dog – which was off a lead – ran across to a much smaller dog – a dachshund – and savagely attacked the defenceless animal, leaving its distraught dog walker watching on powerlessly.
Within seconds the smaller of the 2 dogs had been killed, leaving a bloody scene behind.
It’s said that the elderly female owner of the offending animal – described as being similar to a Leonberger – then arrived with a 2nd large dog, but was ‘discompassionate’ at the situation.
Reacting to the news, 1 person has said:
“The thought of going for a walk one morning and the same evening having an empty bowl, a cold lap and chew toys never to be used again hurts the soul”.
It’s claimed the there was another incident involving a Chihuahua, which was ‘thrown into the air’, shortly before the fatal attack.
It’s understood that a photo of the dog owner has been captured and that Police have been made aware of the incident.

The offending dog owner should be charged & banned from keeping any animal
The offendind dog owner should be put down !
That animal should be destroyed and the owner banned from keeping dogs for life plus heavily fined. But unless the dog actually harms a person the police usually do very little.
Keep your dogs on a lead simple
A dog that big and powerful would not be stopped by a lead, especially held by an elderly owner!
Sorry to the dog owner who has lost a loved one.
I have personally had a similar situation happen. Luckily I was close enough to give the bigger dog a swift kick.
Since then I always have a walking stick to hand and keep a wary eye on Any dog that has the advantage over mine.
A good kick sorts most things out. Well done you. And no need to worry the police out of their cosy warm car.
Having had two close calls with dogs off leads threatening me between Puckpool and Ryde i now carry a hiking stick with the cover on the point removed and the next dog that goes for me won’t even make it to the vets
So sorry to the lady , what a terrible ordeal for her , losing a pet is traumatic enough but this is so , well there are no word’s to describe it.
Hope the owner is caught …
Shouldn’t be allowed to keep animals if they can’t control them .
OMG. So sorry to the poor owner that has lost their dog to a vicious attack from another dog. There have been so many horrible dog attacks in the news just recently & worrying stories on Facebook. Gosh, this poor, poor dog owner, terrible thing to happen. My heart goes out to her. A lot of people out there that just can’t control their dogs. Hope they find this dog owner, it could be a child next time.
What a nice dog owner.
Let’s dog off lead that then attacked smaller dog didn’t care what had happened.
All dogs in public areas should be on a lead & under control.
Condolences to the poor small dogs owner.
The offender needs hefty fine & banned from owning any dog as has no control over dogs she has.
OMG. This is horrendous. This ‘discompasionate’ woman, as she’s been described on this post, I could call her a lot worse, MUST be found and the attacking dog confiscated and destroyed by the Police.
What has the island become when you can’t go out for fear of other totally irresponsible, uncaring dog owners who know perfectly well what their dog is capable of, attacking and killing your own dog.
I hope people come forward with information regarding this woman. Someone will know who she is and where she lives. This dog must not be allowed to get away with this. It will continue to attack other dogs. God helps us!
I couldn’t agree with you more. I don’t go to so many, many places on this beautiful Island with my dog because I am fearful of exactly this happening. She is small and I am old so we are no match for these disgusting entitled owners and their vicious animals. There are huge numbers of terrible dog owners here who simply don’t care.
But the police won’t do anything as dog on dog isn’t a police matter just like the poor old lady on Pan who’s dog also got attacked by another dog and the police did nothing. Sadly they will just wait until a child gets killed
Just because us, the public don’t here if any follow ups have been actioned on dangerous dogs, doesn’t mean they don’t follow up.
I would like to think they do???? We can’t have dangerous dogs going around attacking and killing other poor dogs. It’s just not right.
I’m sure people will tell me the Police don’t investigate at all. IOW Police, if you read this, I hope you do follow up and investigate a dangerous dog killing another in a totally unprovoked attack resulting in death?
All dogs should be kept on a lead in public places. I’ve owned dogs in the past and always kept them on leads.
How long before we have the terrible situation that was reported yesterday where a dog walker on the mainland was killed by a pack of out of control dogs. I am a dog lover but always keep mine on their leads when out in public areas. KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEAD.
That could have been a small child.
Elsewhere a woman was killed in a dog attack this week.
So here we go with usual ‘it’s a minority of irresponsible owners routine.
Dogs are natural killers, large or small, I grew up with dogs, some nice, others less, all were NOT to be trusted as they could turn at any moment.
The offending animal needs to be destroyed, the owner along with it by all accounts too.
I’m no fan of dogs, their mess, noise and vile stink, nor their usually bloody terrible owners. but my thoughts are with the owner of that poor little dachshund I do hope you get some form of recompense for your traumatic loss.
I owned a Leonnberger for seven years, and she was one of the soppiest dogs I have ever owned, along with my other dog, a Newfoundland. I am very surprised to hear that the attacking dog is described as being like a Leonberger, I hope it isn’t one. The owner must be found and prosecuted, and banned from keeping ANY animals, if what has been said is true
It is and she has two!
Publish the picture. Before this uncaring person, stands back as there dangerous dog mauls a child.
Get the photo on social media – public shaming of the owner is the answer as a dog on dog attack is not an offence. Police will only take action if the dog attacks a person.
Horrific, the poor lady such a traumatic incident. Hope they locate the lady with the vicious dogs and read the riot act to her. The concern is that if the dogs do it once they will do it again and next time it could be a small child so this should be seen an a priority before someone else suffers they same as the killed dog owner.
I was up there last summer sat on seat by sea and some woman with 2 large brown loose dogs went along…a smaller dog on lead with a couple sat also on a seat…big loose dog started attacking small white one hell of a noise.shook me up seeing it.all woman of loose fogs did was then wslk in opposite direction calling both loose dogs! Wth.leads or NO DOGS ALLOWED
If you have a description. Report it! Things like this will work towards prosecution. From what I have been hearing this is the first sign off aggression these dogs have shown.
Dog on dog attack is not an offence however having a dog dangerously out of control is. The police can definitely do something. It is a case that can end in prosecution and not another case ended on a shelf!
Quite right. But another, lesser known, offence is “putting someone IN FEAR of an attack” and that’s exactly what happens in these fog on dog attacks where the owner is scared to intervene.
Its time to go old school and sort our own issues out. The police don’t help like the used too.
Such very sad news , but someone must know who the lady with the big dog is, this needs to be sorted
A picture of the owner and dogs should be available on social media to alert other dog owners and walkers. My dog is always kept on a lead when out walking. She obviously is unable to control her dog so should not be allowed to own large breeds
