Police have closed off access to Culver Down due to an ongoing incident involving an individual at the cliff edge this evening (Tuesday).
A total of 7 Police cars are reported to be in attendance at the beauty spot between Bembridge and Sandown.
Members of the public have been told to leave the area as Emergency services respond to the situation, which began some time before 18:30.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor have been mobilised to the scene to assist Hampshire Constabulary.
UPDATE @ 19:10 – The incident has been brought to a positive conclusion.
Emergency teams are now standing down.

I really hope this ends well, so sad.
Wonderful news that the outcome is positive xx
What were members of the public doing up there anyway , if you ask me there a lot of ppl going about as usual disregarding the lockdown rules
They were probably people who live nearby taking their daily exercise which is permitted both under the guidelines (and the law).
Unless you are high risk nothing says you have to stay at home all the time and, in fact, the expert advice is that you should go out for daily exercise as long as you maintain 2m social distancing.
Walking.
Glad the incidence had a good ending.
Exactly my question why were there members of the public up there?
Both my wife & I have been in isolation for nearly 3 weeks yet these people are up there.
Maybe walking their dogs which is not allowed, driving out is a no no but not to them the virus speading gits.
Well done to all our emergency crews involved & hope the individual gets the help they need but please did it really need seven police cars there? Hope every one safe.
They should close that area off to non residents right now anyway. I hope the person receives the support they need
Why? Is it getting overcrowded up there?
(Exercise is still legal and advised)
You are not permitted to use your car to drive to a destination in order to exercise. It is an unnecessary journey.
No, you are permitted to drive somewhere that’s “local” to your own address. That makes sense, as many places very near someone’s home may be unsuitable for exercising (eg. unsafe ground, private land.) It also gives people a bit of choice, without which there could be a drop in exercise rates, and we don’t want to turn ourselves into a nation of the unfit in a few months’ time.
We are really in unprecedented times and sadly this is not a surprise to me because many people are going to be suffering whether they are employed or have their own business, my thoughts with the individual involved
Hope the person involved is OK.
Can’t help wondering if all seven cars were really “essential” though.
Probably waiting to fine them for walking too far from home once they’d talked them down. So glad they’re ok. Lots of people finding this situation hard to cope with let’s hope help is given.
Further to my comments, I just struggled to understand the amount of tax payers money involved in sending 7 police cars & their occupants to this situation when our poor NHS needs every penny at the moment. I’m not being unsympathetic to what happened at Culver and thank god we’ve got our emergency services who never question being called out.
Not enough to do ???
Well, we’re not privy to the reasons for it, are we. I’m willing to bet they exist. Getting members of the public to leave could have been dicey, and detrimental to the sensitive situation unless handled sensitively and firmly by enough police officers, so that disturbances didn’t break out and things then end badly for the vulnerable person.
