Emergency services have been called to a road traffic collision on Forest Road on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Thursday).
The incident, which is said to involve 2 cars, has taken place at the Vittlefields crossroads where Forest Road meets Whitehouse Road and Betty Haunt Lane.
Island Echo is told that a black Citroen C1 has pulled out of Betty Haunt Lane into the path of a Ford Fiesta travelling westbound from Newport.
Police and paramedics are on scene having been alerted to the crash at around 08:50.
Motorists should avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 09:19 – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is now on scene, in the interests of safety. 1 appliance from Newport is in attendance.
Traffic is extremely heavy in all directions and the road has now been closed by Police. Middle Road is also closed for roadworks, leading to lengthy diversions for motorists.
Southern Vectis says that Route 7 buses will divert from newport via Brighstone, Mottistone, Brook and Chessell before turning to either Newbridge or Elm Lane to Shalfleet. The diversion will operate in both directions.
UPDATE @ 13:28 – It has been confirmed that 2 people have been taken to hospital.
Island Echo understands an elderly driver in the Citroen pulled out of Betty Haunt Lane.

When will the council face the fact that road needs traffic lights
When will the council face facts that island drivers are idiots…
Not all
Drivers not observing road condition.
When will drivers look where they are going?
should have been sorted after that poor Lady was killed in accident with a bus.
When will people open their bloody eyes and look before pulling out!
When will people , when seeing a car waiting to pull out of a junction that they are approaching, at least throttle off and cover the brake, just in case.?
No TRAFFIC LIGHTS sod that… how about just a STOP sign instead of a YEILD sign. That way drivers will need to stop before trying to get across or onto Forest road. TOO many drivers think everyone is doing 30 mph, so they pull out… or they do not stop long enough to actually attempt to guess at other cars speeds… and to actually SEE…. More bad driving with UNDUE CARE AND ATTENTION…
BAD DRIVERS
Driving with undue care and attention doesn’t seem such a bad idea…
Or did you mean “driving without due care and attention”?
How is undue care and attention ,bad driving ?
When will people slow down, and concentrate also
drive to the conditions, traffic lights not needed stop pointing the finger,.
When I am driving along Forest Road, regardless of which direction, I always cover the brake pedal as I am approaching that junction until I have passed it and my mind is always alert to the possibility of a vehicle emerging from the junction without stopping.
52 years of high mileage driving, fast when it’s safe to do so, and never a scrape.
Many moons ago when I passed my driving test, my late father’s advice to me was, you should remain safe if you treat other drivers as suicidal idiots and you will always be prepared and ready for the unexpected idiotic situation happening, that has stood by me very well.
Old school, and a bloody good old school….
So true..
Unfortunately lots of drivers do not read the road, have any idea of the speed of an approaching vehicle..and not aware of Hazard perception
more bad driving?,.. or is the junction to blame ?
I’m sure there’ll be plenty of opinions along soon….
The council will wait till there is multiple deaths at this junction, that poor lady that died is not enough to sort this junction
It has now got to the serious situation whereby the Council is responsible for not taking appropriate remedial action. I use this junction, it is extremely difficult to see what is coming down the main road, and at speed. IOW COUNCIL DO SOMETHING NOW, REPEAT NOW.
Do all of you making comments directed at the council on a news outlet; honestly think that it’s going to make any difference? Perhaps it’s more than one factor for accidents happening at this junction; perhaps a combination of it being a poor junction and poor drivers on the road? The council cut the hedge back to allow a better view of the road – not a substantial change, agreed, but it was something to help nevertheless.
The road is a 60, from all directions, those on forest don’t slow down for those emerging from Betty Haunt and Whitehouse because its not a give way. Those wanting to turn out from Betty Haunt and Whitehouse either pull out in the hope oncoming traffic will slow for them, or they try to pull out too fast.
Traffic extremely heavy in that area, wait until the new build. Getting and and out of Newport is horrendous at peak times, a sure sign before any more building is undertaken that the roads need to be improved.
Roads and cars are evil. The thinking is, the worse the roads the less traffic. Welcome to the new age of enlightenment …..
Elderly driver pulled out, now that’s a surprise!!
Slow the road down to 40 through to the other side of vittlefields farm plus make the visual displays better and most of the accidents will stop.
I’ve lived on Forest Road most of my life and I use the junction most day’s, it’s just dangerous and leaves no room for error, hope everyone involved are OK.
That’s it, blame the roads why don’t you? Next you’ll be banning spoons for making people fat!
But it’s ok,the council paid more for an independent assessment as decided no need for improvement, why?. I use junction regular and occasionally it’s a little difficult to see and judge speed of traffic especially from Yarmouth , give way sign in hedge and not good road markings. A stop sign and clear view is what’s needed, this junction will only get worse with extra traffic and weather, why so many idiots drive at speed without lights on in poor weather.
What an absolute load of codswallop.
It’s a perfectly safe crossroads, as long as drivers abide by the rules of the highway code, I have negotiated that crossroads thousands of time in the last 52 years, it is perfectly safe, I always come to a halt, check the road in all directions, if I see a vehicle coming along Forest from Newport, it only takes me a split second to judge its speed, then proceed if it’s safe to do so, the elderly lady obviously did none of the above, to do so is playing Russian roulette, the oncoming vehicle must have been very close to the junction, and she should have seen it, there is no excuse, if the oncoming vehicle had been couple of hundred metres away, the driver would have been able to do an emergency stop.
This junction is lethal disregarding anyone’s age! And to those that don’t have anything better to do but pass judgement over another’s driving, maybe they should look at their own driving abilities and slow down !! Stop using our roads as a racing track! And to Isle of Wight council PLEASE lower the speed limits across our island, especially at junctions and through villages
I would advise everyone who does not know this junction to try it from all four directions before placing all the blame on drivers.
Why don’t all the perfect drivers who regularly fill these boxes with their judgmental comments consider the victims of these road accidents. Unless you have been a witness to an accident the only knowledge you have is hearsay. Why don’t you give everyone a break, keep your nasty uninformed remarks to yourselves, and concentrate on getting a life.
Guess it wouldnt be a forum then..
