A joint Police and Fire investigation is underway to establish how a large fire broke out at the derelict Parkbury Hotel in Sandown in the early hours of this morning (Saturday). As first reported by Island Echo, a total of 6 pumping appliances from stations across the Island, an aerial ladder platform and the Incident Command Unit were on scene at Broadway, where flames were seen bursting through the roof of the former hotel. Wholetime and retained firefighters worked hard to contain the blaze, which broke out on the southern side of the once-grand hotel sometime around 01:00. After a long 4 hours, the blaze was extinguished by 05:00, with the stop message received at around 05:30.
There were no casualties inside the building when the fire broke out. A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson has said:
“Police officers are providing a scene guard to allow for a joint Fire and Police investigation into the cause of the blaze.”

Islandwide CCTV would help.
Just need to keep increasing Council taxes to pay for it.
Derelict building? Did somebody say insurance?
Ahhh moving into Arson season for derilict buildings/hotel on The Island especially when it makes planning decisions that bit easier?.
No sign or Ariel appliances there in the picture surely that should of been on initial attendance ,as the fire engines obviously been there a while to be set up as shown in picture , probably insurance claim .
I don’t think premises like this should be able to be insured once declared derelict or unfit to house anybody, that would put the responsibility back to owners to keep up together etc etc and save the council / fire authority thousands while not having to send all the resources at it
I’d be interested to know exactly how many hotels in that area of the island have ‘caught fire’. I have vague memories of reading about similar fires going back to the 1970’s. It’s a wonder any hotel can afford fire insurance at all.
Lovely turdtown..jewel of the isle….a big brown diamond shaped turd..
